At Baker Hicks, our Ground Engineering specialists play a vital role in delivering some of the UK’s most complex and high-impact infrastructure projects. We’re looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Manchester. You’ll work across sectors including Rail, Highways, Power, Defence, Aviation, Life Sciences, and Water, contributing to the technical delivery of innovative, integrated ground engineering solutions. You’ll also support junior engineers and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities
  • Develop geotechnical design and specification packages from concept to completion
  • Ground modelling and deriving characteristic geotechnical parameters
  • Prepare desk studies, ground investigation specifications, and interpretive reports
  • Design shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, soil nails, and earthworks
  • Tackle complex ground conditions such as soft soils, slope instability, mine workings, and marginal materials
  • Supervise ground investigations and provide site support when required
  • Collaborate with internal design teams and external stakeholders
  • Represent Baker Hicks in client meetings and technical discussions
  • Ensure compliance with current codes and standards including EC7, BS, CDM, and H&S regulations
What We’re Looking For
  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Engineering Geology (or equivalent)
  • Progress toward chartership (ICE, Geol Soc, IMMM); MSc or PhD is a plus
  • A full UK driving licence
  • Experience in a design consultancy environment
  • Proven geotechnical design experience (foundations, retaining walls, earthworks, slope stability, etc.)
  • Solid understanding of UK ground conditions and investigation practices
  • Proficiency in geotechnical design software (GEO5 experience desirable)
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills
  • A collaborative, solution-oriented mindset
  • PTS certification is desirable but not essential
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for short-term site work across the UK
