Principal Chartered Structural Engineer
Location: Wigan
Salary: up to £70,000
My client is a well‑established, multi‑disciplinary consultancy practice operating in the North West of England. They are seeking a chartered structural engineer to manage the structural section of the practice. The business predominantly works in residential development throughout the northwest of England and is now expanding into both superstructure and substructure work following its acquisition by a southern‑based engineering firm. The successful candidate will manage day‑to‑day operations of the structural section and lead a programme to grow the department, reporting directly to the managing director.
We require an engineer with at least 15 years of general UK construction experience, ideally within a multi‑disciplinary practice, and who currently holds a management role. The candidate must be chartered with either the IStruct
E or ICE. Additional professional qualifications will be considered advantageous.
- Manage the current structural engineering team on a day‑to‑day basis
- Lead the design and delivery of a diverse range of structural engineering projects from concept to completion
- Provide technical oversight and guidance to project engineers and technicians
- Conduct structural surveys
- Manage and mentor junior engineers and technicians
- Prepare structural calculations, drawings, and specifications
- Collaborate with other disciplines and stakeholders to ensure project success
- Interface with existing clients regarding their requirements
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (BEng or MEng)
- Chartership in either structural or civil engineering (or both)
- Proven strong experience in super‑ and sub‑structure engineering design across various project stages
- Strong technical skills and experience with relevant design software
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in leading teams or mentoring junior staff
- A proactive and detail‑oriented approach to work
