The Role
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you’ll work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and wider school staff to support a pupil with SEMH needs in accessing learning and achieving positive outcomes. This role requires patience, empathy, and a calm, consistent approach.
Key Responsibilities- Provide one-to-one and small group support tailored to SEMH needs
- Implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and follow behaviour support strategies
- Support teaching and learning in the classroom
- Help maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment
- Support social and emotional development through positive relationship‑building
- Monitor progress and report to teaching and SEN staff
- Assist with personal care needs if required
- Experience working with children with SEN/SEMH in a school or specialist setting
- Good understanding of SEMH and strategies to support emotional regulation and engagement
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Patient, resilient, and empathetic approach
- Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification is beneficial but not essential
