We currently have an exciting opportunity for Teaching Assistant Level 3 with a specific focus on English as an Additional Language (EAL) to join our fantastic team at Chorlton High School.
Working under the guidance of teachers and senior staff, the successful candidate will take a lead role in supporting pupils for whom English is an additional language, helping them to access the curriculum, develop academic English, and overcome language-related barriers to learning.
The role involves working with individual pupils, small groups and occasionally whole classes, delivering targeted EAL support and interventions, and contributing to inclusive classroom practice across the school.
Support for Pupils (EAL Focus)- Deliver targeted EAL support programmes for individuals and small groups, including support for newly arrived pupils.
- Support pupils’ development of spoken and written English, including vocabulary acquisition, comprehension, and academic language.
- Use specialist EAL knowledge and strategies to support access to the curriculum across subject areas.
- Promote inclusion, confidence and independence for pupils with EAL.
- Act as a positive role model and build strong, supportive relationships with pupils.
- Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to teachers and pupils.
- Support pupils’ pastoral, social and emotional needs as appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with teachers to plan, deliver and adapt EAL support and classroom strategies.
- Contribute to lesson planning, preparation of resources and evaluation of learning activities.
- Maintain accurate records of pupil progress and contribute to assessments, reports and reviews.
- Support assessment activities, including routine testing and exam invigilation where required.
- Provide advice and guidance to staff on effective EAL strategies and inclusive practice.
- Liaise with parents/carers and external agencies where appropriate, including attendance at meetings.
- Implement agreed EAL learning programmes and interventions, adapting activities in response to pupil needs.
- Support pupils to access subject-specific language and learning tasks.
- Use ICT and other resources to support language development and independent learning.
- Prepare and maintain specialist EAL resources and materials.
- Contribute to the wider ethos, values and inclusive culture of Chorlton High School.
- Promote equality, diversity and inclusion, ensuring all pupils have access to learning opportunities.
- Support behaviour management strategies in line with school policy.
- Comply with safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality and data protection requirements.
- Support educational visits and enrichment activities as required.
- Work effectively as part of a team and contribute to the development of good practice across the school.
- Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or similar or equivalent experience.
- Experience of supporting pupils with EAL in a secondary school or similar setting.
- A strong understanding of language acquisition and barriers faced by EAL learners.
- The ability to work independently and collaboratively with teaching staff.
- Excellent communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
- A commitment to inclusion, high expectations and pupil progress.
