Position: Locally Employed Resident Doctors

Role Summary

This surgical oncology fellowship at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust provides senior trainees with consultant‑level decision‑making and hands‑on experience in advanced rectal cancer, colorectal cancer, appendix tumours, anal cancer, and pelvic malignancies. Fellows will serve as first assistant/supervised surgeon in 50‑70 complex and major cases, gain expertise in cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC), multivisceral resections, laparoscopic and robotic surgery, and participate in research and education activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop independent practice in colorectal cancer and peritoneal disease management.
  • Lead and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including colorectal, neuroendocrine, retroperitoneal sarcoma and pelvic oncology specialists.
  • Perform 50‑70 complex and major surgical cases as first assistant/supervised surgeon.
  • Engage in research projects, prepare abstracts and publications, and contribute to teaching and surgical education.
  • Commit to Level 1b on‑call duties compliant with EWTD.
Qualifications and Experience

Eligibility is limited to senior trainees post CCT or within 12 months of post‑CCT, with a strong background in colorectal and pelvic oncology and a commitment to developing consultant‑level decision‑making.

Duration and Rotation

The fellowship lasts 12 months, commencing February 2026. Fellows will work closely with the Colorectal Team, receive an Assigned Educational Supervisor for the year, and experience a structured rotational programme designed to balance exposure across colorectal and pelvic surgery.
