The critical care unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital is the largest general adult critical care unit in the region, with 33 commissioned beds (L3: 17 beds, L2: 16 beds, with 5 additional L1.5 surgical beds) and over 1600 emergency admissions, in addition to a large number of elective surgical admissions managed by 19 critical care consultants. There is a wide spectrum of pathology from medical and surgical patients admitted from both within and outside the hospital.
Bed occupancy usually exceeds 85 %. Haemodialysis and haemofiltration are performed on approximately 15 % of our patients, reflecting the patient population admitted. The unit can treat severe respiratory failure with regular use of proning; the nearest ECMO unit is in Wythenshawe. Both transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography are available for haemodynamic monitoring, and the unit has a number of accredited FICE, TOE and CUSIC mentors and supervisors.

Main duties of the job- 8.5 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC), including on‑call cover. The role may be split with another speciality, typically up to 2.5 PAs, subject to negotiation at the time of appointment. Additional clinical PAs may be available in critical care, subject to review.
- 1.5 PAs for supporting professional activities (SPAs) offered at appointment, with additional sessions for additional lead roles.
- Participation in a rota designed on a consultant‑of‑the‑week basis, with daily coverage by three consultants. The new staff member will support a team of nineteen consultants, contributing to continuity of care.
- Coverage of the unit's schedule, including weekday on‑call from 19:30 to 08:00 and resident cover until 02:00. Weekend frequency and additional ad‑hoc clinical days will also be required.
The successful applicant will join the Royal Liverpool University Hospital critical care team as part of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which comprises Aintree, Broadgreen and Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
