Overview
This Junior Surgical Fellow (JSF) post is suitable for candidates who are post F2 level or above and who are interested in pursuing a career in surgery, developing their clinical and surgical skills and gaining a unique experience in the surgical management of a wide range of malignancies in one of Europe’s largest comprehensive cancer centres. They will gain exposure to inpatient and outpatient care;
urgent/emergency care, peri-operative management, and be supported to gain a grounding in basic and intermediate surgical skills and exposure to minimally invasive surgery and to complex surgery where desired. This is an opportunity to work in a busy tertiary centre with exposure to modern cancer management, including techniques such as robotic surgery and cytoreductive surgery with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).
The post provides a parallel training experience, not formally recognised as a training post, but delivering a similar experience and ideally suited as a bridge to core surgical and specialty training. At the end of the post they will receive a reference and guidance on applying for surgical training programmes.
- Clinical duties and opportunities: management of acute and chronically ill surgical patients and diagnostic testing; assessment of surgical patients; effective communication and counselling including breaking bad news; coordinating treatment and investigative procedures; discharge planning; prescribing and administering drugs; undertaking pre-operative, post-operative, and enhanced recovery care; attendance in surgical clinics and in theatre; participation in regular audit, MDT and ongoing departmental research;
attendance at emergencies with senior/junior colleagues and emergency team.
- The JSF will be supported by a team of consultants, SAS doctors, specialty trainees, clinical fellows and specialist nurses and will be part of a cohesive group of junior clinical fellows and core trainees across the hospital. They will be part of the wider surgical ward-based team and rotate through four surgical oncology specialties (urology, plastics, colorectal and gynae oncology surgery).
Location and Working Pattern
- Duration: 6 months. Start February 2026. Based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Wilmslow Road, Manchester M20 4BX
. - Place of work: based at The Christie; input to inpatient wards (28 beds), an Oncology Critical Care Unit, 5 operating theatres, and the Integrated Procedures Unit; rotates with all four surgical oncology specialities; daily ward rounds; attend clinics, MDTs and theatre sessions.
- Rota: 1 in 6 on-call; mix of 8:00–16:00 day shifts, occasional long days (8:00–21:00) and daytime weekend cover (08:00–21:00) with compensatory off days.
- Professional Registration: full General Medical Council registration and Licence to Practice.
- On-Call Commitment: scope for 1:6 on-call rota during day hours.
- Leave Entitlement: 5 weeks and 2 days annual leave (27 days) per year plus 8 public holidays pro rata if part time.
- Essential Training: all Christie doctors must keep up to date with essential training to meet regulatory requirements for training and safe practice.
- Education and Training: JSF will have an Educational Supervisor; periodic appraisal with the Educational Supervisor; opportunities to gain skills in communication, symptom control and surgical emergencies; mentorship and career guidance; potential to improve portfolios to compete nationally for rotations.
- Weekly teaching: a weekly junior doctor teaching session; regular feedback with senior medical staff; attendance at educational lectures, meetings and seminars.
- Library and academic links: strong medical library and links with the Christie PG/UG Education Centre/School of Oncology; study leave and funding for approved courses may be available.
- Postgraduate programmes: up to possibility to undertake MRes or MCh programmes offered by The Christie.
- Commitment to high-quality service, patient safety, and ongoing clinical governance, with familiarity with Trust risk management, blood transfusion policy, and infection prevention and control policies; annual training upgrades required.
- Appraisal and Revalidation: mandatory annual appraisal and GMC/Revalidation requirements; details provided on onboarding.
- Continuing Professional Development: GMC and surgical college CPD support, with time and financial support available.
