The Registered Nurse coordinates and delivers high quality, patient-centered care in accordance with the nature and specific requirements of the department, and consistent with the scope and standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty. In collaboration with medical providers and other members of the care team, the RN provides individualized, comprehensive, and compassionate care using established nursing models such as “Assess, Perform, Teach, and Manage.”
The RN serves as an advocate for patients/families/caregivers and models a commitment to the organization’s vision/mission/values to support an unparalleled patient experience and clinical outcomes that contribute to overall departmental performance.
- Assesses patient condition during admission and during each shift as scheduled and/or as needed, identifying and reporting any changes in patient status.
- Assesses patient environment for safety risks and/or non-compliance with regulatory standards.
- Assesses patient pain regularly to promote effective pain management, including reassessments after appropriate intervention.
- Assesses patient condition for signs and symptoms of abuse or neglect; reports any indications to medical providers, nurse leader, and/or appropriate agency.
- Performs procedures, monitoring, or other functions as ordered by the medical providers and documents the administration of care in the patient medical record in a timely and thorough manner.
- Performs the administration of prescribed medications, monitors therapeutic response, and notifies the provider and intervenes as appropriate in case of unintended responses.
- Responds promptly to patient requests and strives to anticipate patient needs and resolve them proactively.
- Teaches patients/families/caregivers about medical conditions, patient status, treatment plan, medications and potential side effects, and follow-up measures; translates complex medical terminology as needed for understanding.
- Teaches about non-medicinal follow-up measures (healthy diet and exercise, disease prevention, lifestyle changes) and prepares patients and families for future self-management.
- Manages a care team, providing oversight and delegation to members as appropriate.
- Supports evidence-based practices and continuous process improvement initiatives to meet and exceed quality measures and enhance patient care.
- Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate, evaluate, customize, and deliver a holistic patient treatment plan that promotes recovery.
