Position: Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)

Overview

This position is located within the Sterile Processing Service Line - at the Manchester New Hampshire Veterans Health System.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • English Language Proficiency:
    Medical Supply Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English
  • Experience and/or

    Education:

    Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work
  • OR

    Education:

    One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing - nursing assistant - hospital corpsman - and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position
  • OR Experience/Education Combination:
    Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable
  • May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria)
  • Grade Determinations:
    In addition to the basic requirements for appointment - the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates
  • GS-03 Experience or Education (Entry Level):
    None beyond the basic requirements
  • GS-04 Experience or Education (Developmental Level) OR

    Education:

    Two years of education above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the occupation
  • NOTE:

    Successful completion of a course for medical technicians - hospital corpsmen - medical service specialists - or nursing assistants obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces - the U.S. Maritime Service - or hospitals under close medical and professional supervision - may be substituted on a month-for-month basis for up to 6 months of experience
  • GS-05 Experience or

    Education:

    Developmental Level - One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04)
  • GS-06 Experience (Full Performance Level):
    One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05)
  • Duties may include - but are not limited to:
    Performs segments of work pertaining to the decontamination - sterilization and inspection of reusable medical equipment (RME)
  • Completes segments of work pertaining to the assembly of basic sets and trays for use in the medical center
  • Operates equipment involved in sterilization processes
  • Prepares operating room case carts
  • OR

    Education:

    Four academic years above high school leading to a Bachelor s degree with at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the occupation or a Bachelor s degree
  • Knowledge, KSAs, and Preferred Credentials: GS-06 criteria include knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings; universal precautions; medical terminology; anatomy and physiology; microbiology; sterility principles; ability to read and interpret instructions
  • Preferred Experience:

    CRCST - CER OR CIS Certification
Duties

  • Supervision and workflow:
    The position is under close supervision and is accountable to the Chief - SPS through the Assistant Chief - SPS
  • Teamwork:
    Work as a team member with other Medical Supply Technicians to carry out daily workload per written SOPs and manufacturers instructions
  • Quality:
    Supervisor evaluates completed work for technical soundness and conformance to agency policies
  • Training:
    All new Medical Supply Technicians must complete Level I training within 90 days of hire; continuing education required (12 hours annually);
    Level 2 training as soon as possible
  • Decontamination and inspection:
    Collects and receives contaminated RME;…
