Position Summary

The Manassas City Police Department (MCPD) is pleased to offer a structured, 8-week Summer Internship Program designed to provide students with firsthand experience in professional law enforcement. This internship delivers practical exposure to core policing divisions and functions while grounding interns in accreditation, accountability, and policy-driven service.

Interns will rotate through divisions, meet subject matter experts, review policy and accreditation standards, and engage in meaningful projects relevant to the following areas:

Patrol Services Division
Public Safety Communications Center
Investigative Services Division
Administrative Services Division
Accreditation and Professional Standards
Specialty Units and Tactical Teams
Office of the Chief of Police and Strategic Leadership
Essential Job Functions
Supports the mission of the Manassas City Police Department by participating in structured, supervised assignments across key operational divisions, including community services, patrol, investigations, and administrative support;

Participates in a guided overview of core law enforcement functions, with emphasis on understanding the agency's policies, accreditation standards, and the connection between departmental policy and daily practice;

Engages in a progressive learning experience designed to expose the intern to the lifecycle of a police service call-from initial dispatch through patrol response, investigative follow-up, and resolution;

Maintains regular communication with the assigned supervisor and submits weekly reflections summarizing learning outcomes and operational insights;

Demonstrates professionalism, ethical conduct, and a commitment to public service in all interactions with department staff and members of the community;

May work occasional hours during the evenings and weekends;

Performs various administrative functions and other similar duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications
Actively enrolled as a student in an undergraduate program with an accredited college or university (including two (2) and four (4)-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges).
* Eligible participants will have an expected graduation date following the commencement of the program*;

Must be at least 18 years of age;

Able to provide own transportation to the work site(s);

Possess a legal right to work in the United States;

Able to commit to the full 8-week program.

Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver's license.

Must have the ability to safely operate motor vehicles;

Must have the ability to maintain effective relationships with fellow employees and the public;

Must have the ability to follow written and oral instructions;

Preferred Qualifications:
Professional working proficiency, or higher, in a foreign language or American Sign Language;

Seeking a Criminal Justice or related degree with a GPA of at least 3.0.

Special Requirements
Enrollment Letter (from the University Registrar); or an Official Transcript from your current institution.

Two (2) letters of recommendation dated within the past twelve months -
  • 1 Academic -required and;
  • 1 Professional (recommended) or;
  • 1 Character reference (accepted for those lacking professional experience from a non-relative)
May require special requirements such as outdoors work, ability to sit, stand and walk throughout the day;
Employment is contingent upon continued enrollment at least half-time as a degree seeking student at a nationally or regionally accredited undergraduate school for incumbents that have completed the High School Diploma or General Education Diploma;
Must be able to pass a background investigation, along with a post-offer and pre-employment drug test.
Part time benefits for those that are eligible vary depending on the amount of hours worked and are defined in the City's Employee Handbook.
