The Registered Respiratory Therapist serves as an intricate member of the healthcare team by establishing an authentic personalized relationship with the patient and their chosen support system, collaborating with physicians and other team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualized respiratory plan of care that promotes optimal health or a comforting peaceful death. The Respiratory Therapist uses best scientific evidence and compassion to assist the patient in navigating their health journey.
The Respiratory Therapist accepts responsibility, authority, and accountability for management and provision of care in accordance with current policies and procedures.
- Collaborates with the care team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualized respiratory plans of care.
- Prioritizes duties according to patients needs and changing acuity levels.
- Administers and evaluates medication therapies, performs patient transfers, and transports patients as needed.
- Communicates the plan of care and patient progress to the care team, patient, and support system; documents information in a timely manner.
- Maintains clinical and professional competencies according to department policies; practices according to state requirements and standards; pursues professional development.
- Engages in quality improvement and safety initiatives; participates in implementation of improvement processes.
- Develops positive relationships with team members and internal customers; resolves conflicts appropriately and accepts feedback.
- May be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
- Education:
Associate s Degree/Certificate required;
Bachelor’s Degree preferred. - Experience:
Refer to Life Support Training Policy for details. - Licensure:
Registered by National Board of Respiratory Care and current RCP licensure in applicable state required. BLS on hire; ACLS, NRP, and PALS within 90 days. VA State Licensure. - Additional Skills/Requirements:
Completes 2 Respiratory Care competencies per year.

Medium to Heavy Physical Demand
The job requires standing and walking constantly and frequently bending/stooping. Frequent repetitive body movements. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and legible writing. Ability to lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs. Use Safe Handling Equipment for weight over 35 lbs.
Other- May require safety equipment, such as HEPA mask, for infection prevention.
- On-call responsibilities as directed.
- Ability to travel between campus buildings, remote facilities, and out of town as needed.
