Job Summary:
The cued language transl iterator provides communication and other support services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in the School Division. The cued language transl iterator facilitates communication among students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school. This position performs work under the general supervision of the Special Education Department and the site-based school administration.
EssentialResponsibilities Specific to this Job
- Participates in educational team meetings as a related service provider, including the development and review of progress on the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) regarding communication
- Provides cued speech transliteration services in order for students to access the curriculum in their classes in accordance with their IEP
- Conveys all auditory, verbal, and environmental information to the students who are deaf or hard of hearing, including instructions, discussions, questions and answers, interruptions, and messages on public systems, movies, slides, student presentations, and other audio-visual presentations, during the school day
- Provides cued speech transliteration for students who are deaf or hard of hearing with voice-to-cue and cue-to-voice
- Provides cued speech transliteration in accordance with the student’s IEP
- Provides cued speech transliteration for other activities during the school day to include assemblies, performances, announcements, field trips, and school-based meetings
- Provides cued speech transliteration for other assignments outside the school day such as tutoring, club meetings, disciplinary actions, bus situations, sports, back-to-school nights, parent teacher meetings, summer school, field trips, etc.
- Provides information and support regarding communication to parents and families of students who are deaf or hard of hearing, and to staff, when appropriate
- Provides cued speech transliteration for students who are deaf or hard of hearing attending Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) parent conferences, back-to-school nights, and other related events
- Prepares for cued speech transliteration for school assignments to ensure accurate information of the material presented
- Provides in-service education and serve as a resource to teachers, school staff members, and administration on topics concerning cued speech transliteration and promote cultural understanding in the educational setting
- Prepares written materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information
- Mentors newly hired cued speech transl iterators and students from Training Programs
- Serves as a role model and encourages self-advocacy and independence for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Follows the direction of the school administrator and adheres to all rules and procedures therein, including the school dress code
- Follows the Standards of Professional Conduct for all Employees as established by PWCS
- Participates as part of a school-based team to ensure all students receive appropriate educational services
- Maintains professional growth and certification through participation in continuing education activities, as appropriate
