DEFINITION
The Recreation Leader I will provide and assist in coordination, organization, leadership, and supervision of a variety of recreational programs, camps, and/or community events.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDReceives immediate supervision from the Recreation Supervisor(s), the Site Coordinator(s), and/or Recreation Leader(s) II. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Lead participants and groups in recreation programs, summer camps, and special events including, but not limited to instruction in recreation activities such as camps, sports, games, arts, crafts, music, and drama.
- Supervision of children, youth, and adults.
- Participate in staff meetings to assist in ideas for recreation programming; organize and implement special events.
- Encourage involvement in recreational programs, activities, and special events by participating in the recreational activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Procedures for developing recreational activities, programs, and special events.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions.
- Work with groups to lead and instruct recreation activities.
- Provide a positive role model for children.
- Take initiative to adapt recreation activities or special event as conditions warrant.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including children, youth, and adults.
- Communicate clearly and concisely and carry out oral and written directions.
- React with good judgment in emergency situations.
- Work an irregular schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Adhere to Town and department‑established rules and regulations, including workplace safety regulations.
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Early Childhood Education, Recreation Administration, or Communication classes are preferred.
ExperienceOne year of experience in recreational and/or child‑related activities and programs is preferred.
LicensesPossession of, or ability to obtain within the state‑required timeframe of ten (10) days within residency, a valid California, Class C driver’s license with an acceptable driving record is preferred. Possession of, or ability to obtain upon hire, current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/First Aid Certificate is required. Must be able to pass an appropriate background check prior to the hire date.
