Job Description Summary

The holder of this position will be part of a team of researchers in a molecular parasitology group within the Department of Pathobiology. The Research Specialist will work with and assist other scientists in the study of parasitic diseases using animal and tissue culture models. The main responsibilities include working with mice in parasite studies, assisting in the engineering of DNA constructs, and collecting and processing samples from mice or cell culture for the team in subsequent experiments.

The position involves breeding, handling, and euthanizing mice; amplifying DNA by PCR, using cloning procedures to generate DNA constructs, performing cell culture, and maintaining records of experiments and reagents. There are minor duties in supervision and general laboratory maintenance.

Job Responsibilities
  • Animal work using mice
  • Sample analysis using molecular assays (PCR, Luminescence)
  • Record keeping and data logging
  • General laboratory maintenance (preparation of solutions and sterilization)
  • Tissue culture and/or molecular biology experiments, including standard cloning and plasmid preparation
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

This position is contingent upon grant funding.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Biology or related field and 0 to 1 year of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Some experience in a research laboratory with hands-on experimentation preferred.
  • Animal experience, particularly with mice and laboratory experience with basic cell culture and molecular biology knowledge (such as PCR, bacterial culture, and gel electrophoresis) preferred.
