The Highway Field Worker is a safety-sensitive position subject to Highway Dept. drug & alcohol procedures. You must be available to report to work during regular business hours and available after hours to respond to emergencies and/or highway conditions. Under general supervision, this entry-level Highway Field Worker position learns and performs highway maintenance duties to maintain safe and efficient travel ways by removing hazards and repairing safety appurtenances.

Hours: Winter:
Mon-Fri 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch. Summer:
Mon-Thurs 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Schedule fluctuates with seasons and workloads. Flexibility is required based on workloads. Must be available to report after hours for emergencies/weather. Availability means you can respond to a phone call within 15 minutes and report to duty within 45 minutes. Overtime is possible. This position is located at the highway and the airport based on needs.

Responsibilities- Must be available to report to work after hours to respond to emergencies and/or highway conditions. Availability is the ability to respond to a phone call within 15 minutes and report to duty within 45 minutes.
- Performs highway maintenance duties including pothole patching, crack filling, sweeping, mowing, brush cutting, guardrail repair, bridge maintenance, etc.
- Performs various maintenance activities at the airport including snow removal, vehicle and equipment maintenance, building maintenance, cleaning, painting, fence and gate repair, brush removal and other duties as assigned.
- Assists Equipment Operators in the construction and repair of highways and related infrastructure.
- Removes hazards and debris from roadways.
- Performs support roles for winter operations such as making brine, plowing parking lots, servicing equipment, repairing signs and mailboxes, etc.
- Supports construction activities by setting signs, erecting barricades, flagging traffic, and assisting in striping operations.
- Understands WIS DOT work zone field manual to correctly set up various traffic control layouts.
- Erects and removes snow fence, repairs fences and barriers on right of way, landscapes roadsides, installs erosion control devices.
- Knowledge and ability to set up levels, lasers and utility locators.
- Operates small tools such as chainsaws, string trimmers, brush cutters, power saws, jackhammers, impacts, painters, drills, etc.
- Operates hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, wrenches, etc.
- Operates non-commercial motor vehicles (CMV) such as trucks, tractors, mowers, brooms, forklifts, loaders, pulls light trailers, operate tar kettles, and other small equipment as assigned.
- Maintains grounds adjacent to highway facilities, planting and cutting grass, laying sod, installing landscape materials, etc.
- Performs minor repairs to facilities.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance; works overtime/extra hours as required.
- Completes and submits records of time, location, materials, and equipment used on each project daily.
- Expected to work in a variety of weather conditions.
- Conduct duties in a safe, diligent manner at all times.
- Ability to communicate relevant information to team members in a respectful and constructive way.
- Effectively maintain equipment through inspections, greasing and lubing, servicing, making minor repairs and adjustments, and operating appropriately.
- Maintain a clean and safe worksite.
- Graduate from high school or G.E.D. and valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
