BRIEFJOB DESCRIPTION
This position is a scientific support position for various research projects which are designed to evaluate the impact of floating offshore wind on marine resources in the Gulf of Maine. The position will assist scientists in coordinating and collecting data for various research projects pertaining to answering questions about the impact of Maine's floating offshore wind research array on marine resources.
The position will be responsible for assisting in coordinating logistics for field and lab work, conducting field and lab work to collect data, operating and maintaining scientific equipment, and entering data into appropriate databases. Examples of some of the projects that this position will work on are: a bottom trawl survey, larval/plankton survey, and a highly migratory species tagging project.
This position will be required to travel and will potentially stay aboard a vessel overnight during any research project. Work may be conducted in inclement weather and adverse conditions such as rough seas. The specialist may be required to act as a team leader in the field for any of these projects. Between projects the position will be responsible for data entry, purchasing equipment, repairing and maintaining equipment, tracking purchases, processing biological samples, and preparing for each survey.
This position may also assist in various ongoing research projects within the department to collect data important to managing Maine's marine resources.
- Extensive at sea work experience in a variety of conditions and the ability to work independently under physically challenging conditions
- Strong ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously with different timelines
- Ability to use ArcGIS, Microsoft Access, and statistical programs
- Working knowledge of basic mathematical operations and statistical techniques
- Working knowledge of resource assessment survey techniques and sampling protocols
- Knowledge/ability to identify marine organisms common in the Gulf of Maine, with an emphasis on fish and zooplankton species
