BRIEF
JOB DESCRIPTION:
This is maintenance and personal services work in providing services to park users, maintaining and repairing facilities at a state park or day use area, and acting as an assistant to the Park Manager or District Supervisor. Responsibilities include meeting the public and providing for their needs and performing tasks necessary to maintain and protect land and water areas, buildings, and other physical facilities at state parks and day use areas.
Supervision may be exercised over a small number of employees. Work is performed under general supervision.
- Constructs, repairs, and oversees the repair of buildings, picnic tables, fireplaces, grounds, swimming areas, roads, trails, restrooms, and water systems to ensure a clean, safe, and attractive park.
- Enforces park rules and regulations to ensure the safety of the environment, facilities, and park users.
- Operates specialized equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders, and bulldozers in order to maintain the park area.
- Compiles, writes, and submits weekly activity, financial, and vehicle reports in order to document park activities and provide information.
- Plans, trains, directs, and evaluates work of other park personnel in order to ensure park buildings and grounds are safe and maintained properly.
- Meets and greets the public and provides information concerning park facilities and rules, historical data, and other related information in order to advise public.
- Searches for lost persons and rescues park visitors on trails in order to assist injured or lost visitors.
- Compiles reports, deposits park income, supervises personnel, and refers problems to the proper authorities during park manager's absence in order to provide continuity of operations.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
REQUIRED:
Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of park facilities and equipment. Knowledge of animal, fish, and plant life found in the area. Knowledge of first aid, and skill in application. Ability to use a variety of tools and equipment in the maintenance and repair of park facilities, grounds, and buildings. Ability to meet the public effectively; to give information regarding park facilities and regulations;
and to look after the safety and welfare of visitors. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to keep records. Ability to patrol the park and to enforce regulations with firmness and tact. Ability to perform mechanical maintenance on automotive and power equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One (1) year of experience in park maintenance and operation or equivalent.

Valid Class C Maine motor vehicle operator’s license.
