Summary

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

The typical seasonal period is May to October but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty:

Duties
  • Operate one or more motor vehicles including platform truck, van trucks, stake trucks, dump trucks, specialty pumping equipment, and trash removal trucks up to 35,000 GVW; some vehicles may have air brakes.
  • Operate vehicles in heavy congestion on public and nonpublic roads and through multiple campgrounds.
  • Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance of equipment.
  • Perform manual labor tasks, such as digging, pulling, cleaning drainage ditches, lifting and emptying trash containers, cleaning rest rooms, picking up litter, cleaning picnic grills, etc.
  • May perform semi‑skilled and unskilled maintenance, repair, and janitorial work in and on various unit buildings. For example, minor plumbing repair, touch‑up painting, minor carpentry repairs, and janitorial work in public and administrative buildings.
Conditions of Employment
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment; position subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • Must operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of official duties; a valid driver's license is required. Must submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License.
  • May be required to complete training and operate a four‑wheel drive vehicle.
  • Will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.
  • May be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Park housing may be available.
  • Ability to safely lift 50 pounds.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old due to hazardous work (i.e., driving a motor vehicle).
Qualifications
  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (Screen‑Out).
  • Operation of motor vehicles.
  • Work practices (including keeping things neat, clean, and in order).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. related to mobile equipment operation.
  • Ability to drive safely (motor vehicles).
  • Ability to operate safely (non‑motor vehicle).
  • Reliability and dependability as a motor vehicle operator.

Volunteer Experience

Volunteer experience, such as paid and unpaid work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations, is considered. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer work.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Non‑Competitive Rehire Eligibility

Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non‑competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of temporary NTE hours less than 1,040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service within their established service year. Non‑competitive rehire eligibility allows for re‑appointment to the same position or another position with the same qualification requirements.
