Seasonal Maintenance Worker (Trails)

Join the National Park Service Seasonal Maintenance Worker (Trails) position – a temporary assignment, typically from May through October, although the exact period may vary due to weather, project needs, or funding. Entry on duty is anticipated for May 2026. This is an open continuous announcement; applicants will be referred throughout the announcement period and final application disposition will be completed when positions are filled or the announcement reaches its closing date, December 29, 2025 at 11:59 pm (EST).

Summary
  • A selectee receiving a first appointment in the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.
Duties
  • Work with and assist laborers, volunteers, and Acadia Youth Conservation Corps under the leadership of a Trail Work Leader, Trail Supervisor, or a WG‑4749‑08 Maintenance Worker.
  • Engage in all aspects of trail maintenance, construction, and repair including drainage and tread maintenance, masonry dry‑stone construction, and carpentry work using heavy log and rough‑sawn lumber for repair of trail structures, and rehabilitation of all trails.
  • Use small equipment, loaders, ATVs, etc., and drive crew cabs, trucks, and passenger vans up to a maximum of 10,000 GVW to transport crew or materials to the job site.
  • Plan, set up, and operate typical overhead rigging systems used in trail work to transport material.
Conditions of Employment
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of official duties; a valid driver’s license is required. Must also submit a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record, and all certified driving records from all States.
  • May be required to complete training and operate a four‑wheel drive vehicle.
  • Will be required to wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Location:

    Patten, ME (Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument) – work may be required on weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Location:

    Bar Harbor, ME (Acadia National Park) – park housing may be available.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old due to hazardous work (e.g., driving a motor vehicle, use of chain saw, etc.).
Qualifications
  • Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT).
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  • Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Use of measuring instruments.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (including blueprint reading).
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials.

Volunteer Experience

Volunteer work—paid and unpaid—through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations may qualify for credit.

Physical Demands

Heavy physical effort required: lifting objects over 100 lbs, carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks several tons with rock bars, frequent hikes up to 20 miles daily while carrying backpack, power and/or hand tools.

Working Conditions

Live and work effectively in backcountry areas, close contact with small numbers of people, out‑doors on projects in various terrain up to 13,000 ft elevation, adverse weather, dusty, hazardous conditions when moving rocks and logs, near explosives, falling trees, and machinery.
