Overview

Summary This Health Technician (Dietetic) position is in Nutrition & Food Services at the VA Maine Healthcare Center - located at the Togus location in Augusta - Maine.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

English Proficiency:
In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) - No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.

You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

GS-5 grade level:
You must meet one of the following:

  • Specialized

    Experience:

    You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience include: applying knowledge of quantity food service operations, proper nutrition, food items and appropriate quantities; working with clients - patients - and/or - customers to assess needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, or satisfy expectations;

    using computers - software applications - databases - and automated systems to accomplish work.
  • Education:

    Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to this position (e.g., nutrition, dietary therapy, food and nutrition science, food service systems management).

    This education must be from an accredited institution. Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
  • Combination:
    Applicants may combine education and experience to qualify at this level. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the position and be obtained from an accredited college or university. Your experience must be documented in your resume and transcripts are required. Volunteer experience is creditable as qualifying experience.
  • Physical Demands and Work Environment:
    The work requires walking, standing, bending, lifting and carrying of light items such as food trays, instructional materials, books, and manuals. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 20 pounds and may involve pushing loaded carts and equipment. May involve long periods of sitting and keyboard/mouse use. Work may require walking indoors or outdoors and periods of continuous standing, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending.

    Work is performed in a hospital environment with potential exposure to contagious diseases. Standard precautions may require use of PPE in situations of potential exposure. For more information on these qualification standards, please visit the Office of Personnel Management website.

    Duties
    • This position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service (N&FS) of the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta, Maine, serving as a Nutrition Communication Center (NCC) Associate, providing administrative and customer service support for the facility food service program.
    • Major duties and responsibilities include: routing modified diets and working with combinations of diet modifications and COTS dietetics software.
    • Handles patient meal service orders in person or by phone.
    • Interacts with Veterans, dietitians, nursing staff, and other medical center employees.
    • Receives patient meal orders and preferences from nursing, clinical staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
    • Takes actions within authority to maximize patient satisfaction with meal service.
    • Completes select and non-select menus as required.
    • Retrieves computerized information to assist with tray and/or nourishment assembly (e.g., standing orders, nourishment labels, recipe lists).
    • Provides education and information on local facility therapeutic diets to patients, guests, and nursing staff.
    • Assists patients in selection of proper foods according to their individual diet.
    • Performs clerical and administrative duties in support of the service.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Work Schedule

    Full-Time - Friday - Tuesday - 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. (off on Wednesday/Thursday).
