Job Summary Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technologist (Clinical Laboratory Scientist)

Location: Togus VA Medical Center – 1 VA Center, Augusta, ME 04330rPeriod of Performance: September 29, 2025 – September 28, 2026Shifts: Evening and Night Shifts (including weekends; flexibility required for all listed shifts)Hourly: $31.95/hr plus $5.09 for H&W

Position Summary:

The Department of Veterans Affairs Maine Healthcare System (VA Maine) is seeking up to five (5) highly skilled Medical Technologists (MTs) to provide comprehensive onsite laboratory services for eligible Veterans. The contracted technologists will deliver services equivalent to those in a state-of-the-art civilian medical treatment facility, meeting or exceeding standards established by the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). The technologists will work in multiple areas of the laboratory based on operational needs, including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, blood bank, and phlebotomy.

ResponsibilitiesKey Responsibilities:General Duties:
  • Perform diagnostic laboratory testing across multiple departments:

    • Chemistry: Routine testing using Abbott Architect ci8200, Abbott Alinity, and manual methods

    • Urinalysis: Automated and manual testing, including QC and maintenance

    • Blood Bank: Crossmatching, antibody screening, cell panels, and emergency processing using gel and tube technology

    • Hematology/Coagulation: Testing with Sysmex, ACL Top, Alcor iSed platforms

    • Microbiology: Culture plating, gram staining, Microscan, PCR, subbing, and result interpretation

    • Phlebotomy & Specimen Processing

  • Perform and document patient and quality control (QC) testing per protocols

  • Participate in the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Proficiency Testing (PT) Program

  • Accurately report results into electronic systems and resolve any discrepancies in testing, collection, or documentation

  • Positively identify patients and samples before collection or testing

  • Maintain patient privacy and safeguard protected health information (PHI)

  • Provide professional, patient-centered service to avoid complaints and ensure high satisfaction

Additional Requirements:
  • Staff may be required to rotate across shifts, including weekends, holidays, and alternate time blocks:

    • Day Shift: e.g., 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, etc.

    • Evening Shift: e.g., 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM, 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM, etc.

    • Night Shift: e.g., 10:00 PM – 6:30 AM, 5:30 PM – 6:30 AM, etc.

  • Staff must be flexible to accommodate potential changes in shift assignments

Minimum Qualifications Qualifications:
  • Certification:Must hold current national certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by an accredited body such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

  • Experience:Minimum 3 years of recent experience across all major lab disciplines:

    • Chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, coagulation, microbiology, and blood bank

  • Credentialing & Privileging:Must comply with VHA Directives 1100.20 and 1100.21 for credentialing and privileging

  • Language Proficiency:Must speak, read, write, and understand English fluently

  • Continuing Education:Must maintain all required Continuing Medical Education (CME) or Certified Education Unit (CEU) credits as per certification board and VA facility requirements

  • Technical Proficiency:Demonstrated ability to independently perform testing, troubleshoot instrumentation, maintain QC, and follow laboratory procedures in accordance with VA and CAP standards

  • Training Requirements:Contractor staff must complete all mandatory VA training. Initial onboarding training time is not billable under this contract

Desired QualificationsPreferred Skills:
  • Familiarity with VA systems and workflows

  • Proficiency in laboratory instruments and platforms such as:

    • Abbott Architect, Sysmex, Microscan, ACL Top, Alcor iSed, Beckman Coulter, PCR testing systems
