Advanced Animal Care Technologist, Rare Disease Translational Center

The Rare Disease Translational Center is seeking a motivated, detail oriented full time Animal Care Technologist to join our team at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. The successful candidate will be working with a dynamic team to support all aspects of the research, including independent management of mouse colonies, making key recommendations regarding breeding management, bio-sampling and evaluation of mouse disposition.

The Rare Disease Translational Center supports the overall mission of The Jackson Laboratory:
To discover precise genomic solution for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health. The RDTC works directly with foundations and their associated teams of basic and clinical researchers to generate custom mouse models with clinical mutations to treat and cure rare disease. This position is an exciting opportunity to work directly with the Center in supporting this mission.

Key Responsibilities
  • Colony Management (70% of time) including maintaining appropriate breeding schemes, managing breeder rotation/replacement, maintain strain pedigree ledgers, precise and legible cage card maintenance, identify and record phenotyping when needed, bio-sampling, submitting samples for genotyping and ability to interpret genotyping results in addition to other duties focused on colony management
  • Biomethods (30% of time) including performing animal euthanasia in accordance with established laboratory procedures for humanely euthanizing mice in barrier facilities, animal restraint, ear notch and other identification methods, bio-sampling for genotyping, various blood sample collection techniques
Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED required; associate degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of mouse genetics as acquired by a degree in the biological sciences or 5+ years work experience in which animal husbandry, colony management, genotyping and processing multi-allele strains were major job responsibilities
  • In depth knowledge and application of genetics knowledge to aid in colony planning and efficient mouse production methods
  • Successful completion of The Jackson Laboratory's Genetics I and II courses strongly preferred
  • ALAT Certification with LAT certification preferred
  • Detail oriented, flexible, ability to multi-task and remain focused
  • Successful proven record of written and oral communication skills sufficient to permit clear and effective exchange of information
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage details accurately
  • Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, web browser, and database software to record and report activities
  • Demonstrated team player with professional, positive attitude and willingness to be flexible, work independently and use time efficiently

Pay Range: $25.34/hr - $36.75/hr, pay is determined by experience.
