About the role: As an Industrial Hygienist / Hazardous Building Materials Specialist at our office in Cumberland, Maine, your role involves a wide range of industrial hygiene and hazardous building materials inspection services for commercial, industrial, governmental, and residential clients. The Industrial Hygienist, Hazardous Building Material Specialist will serve as a key technical contributor and project manager, working closely with clients, contractors, and internal staff.
This position also includes mentoring and supporting less experienced team members. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential to success in this role.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct indoor air quality testing and environmental sampling
- Monitor and assess employee exposures to noise and other occupational health hazards
- Perform hazardous building materials inspections and sampling
- Prepare abatement design specifications and technical reports
- Provide oversight of hazardous material abatement activities
- Manage projects including scheduling, budgeting, and client coordination
- Support site planning, permitting, bid review, and construction services
- Prepare investigation reports and regulatory documentation
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior staff
- Maintain strong organizational practices to manage environmental samples and observations
- Serve as a collaborative team member, delivering practical and cost-effective solutions for clients
Qualifications:
- B.S. in a physical science preferred (Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, or related field)
- Understanding of environmental regulations and the ability to interpret regulatory requirements
- Understanding of building construction, sealing, and ventilation
- Understanding of OSHA regulations, health and safety protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE), and employee exposures to workplace hazards
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Proven ability to work directly with clients and contractors, respond to requests, and provide consistent support
- Ability to perform field work in varying weather and environmental conditions, including:
- Climbing ladders and working in elevated areas
- Accessing confined spaces
- Wearing PPE, including full-body coverings and tight-fitting, air-purifying, negative pressure respirators
- Working nights or weekends when needed
- Ability to pass a physical as required for work involving potentially hazardous materials
- ACAC: CIE, CMC, or CMI preferred
- Board of Certified Safety Professionals: CSP preferred
- Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, technical report writing, and data interpretation
- Limited day & overnight travel with occasional overnight stays may be required at times
