About the Role

The Oxford Hills School District is seeking candidates for a Special Education Bus Aide for an Out of District Student. AM and PM bus runs.

Work Schedule

180 Day Contract. Position could be a year‑round or school‑year (175 days) position depending on student need.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Educational Technician I certification required.
  • Prior experience working with children strongly preferred.
  • Must successfully pass background checks in accordance with Maine Department of Education requirements.
Reports To

Director of Student Services and Director of Transportation.

Job Goal

The Bus Aide would support the needs of students riding district transportation. This individual is responsible for assisting in monitoring student behavior and related needs while riding transportation to and from school.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Ensures the implementation of the District's mission and goals.
  • Promotes a positive environment and interacts in a positive manner with colleagues, parents, and students.
  • Supports the driver in ensuring a safe ride for all students to and from school. Assist students with safe boarding, seating, and exiting of the bus, including students with disabilities and mobility equipment.
  • Monitor and report student behavior and provide support when necessary, including implementing behavioral support plans and expectations for individual student needs.
  • Monitors individual medical needs for students requiring health plans and follows emergency procedures outlined in plans as needed.
  • Communicate respectfully and appropriately with students, parents, school staff, and transportation personnel.
  • Secure wheelchairs, car seats, safety vests, and other adaptive equipment according to training and state requirements.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, including use of evacuation procedures and first aid if trained.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA and MSAD 17 policies.
  • Participate in required safety drills, in‑service training, and certifications.
Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and assist with student mobility needs.
  • Ability to remain calm, patient, and professional in challenging situations.
  • Primarily on school buses in varying weather conditions.
  • Exposure to noise and frequent movement while assisting students.
Work Schedule And Compensation
  • Follows the district transportation calendar.
  • Compensation and benefits per MSAD 17 support staff agreement.

  • Delivering strong literacy instruction across content areas;
  • Helping student develop skills to apply, interpret, analyze, and evaluate the vast, ever‑expanding amount of information;
  • Employing effective lesson design by adjusting to students' personal learning needs and preferences, including appropriate technology applications.
