Summer Seasonal, Art / Design Teacher
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Agassiz Village Arts Instructor develops and implements art lessons that interest and engage students ages 8-17 for 6 weeks during the summer. The ideal candidate will be able to create lessons that inspire creativity, while having fun within the classroom. The instructor should be an imaginative, experienced person who inspires fascinating projects such as collage, printing, sculpture, painting, tie-dye, candle making, puppets, masks, and multi‑media projects for co‑ed campers.
This position includes organizing projects and materials for each day of camp as well as creating samples of each project. We are looking for a creative person who can create a curriculum for all ages. Group size varies but typically the instructor will have 12 campers per period, several times during the day. The arts instructor will also act as a cabin counselor when not leading arts programming.
and Key Functions:
- Develop and deliver age‑appropriate arts curriculum that aligns with program goals and promotes creativity and self‑expression.
- Provide a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student growth and development.
- Create opportunities for students to showcase their work to build confidence and promote self‑expression.
- Promote teamwork and collaboration among students, encouraging them to work together on projects and explore different forms of art together.
- Collaborate with program staff to develop and implement interdisciplinary projects and activities.
- Track and report student progress and provide regular feedback to students and program staff.
- Attend training sessions and staff meetings to stay up‑to‑date on program expectations and developments.
- Take every opportunity to teach campers social and emotional skills such as relationship building, perseverance, self‑reflection, goal setting and more as you encourage each camper to recognize what they are capable of.
- Conduct daily check of program area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair in compliance with American Camp Association (ACA) standards.
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned including weekend and evening activities.
- Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, with approval of supervisor, ensuring timely arrival of materials.
- Follow the schedule, beginning and ending each activity on time.
- Act in the capacity of a Cabin Counselor when not instructing.
- Perform an end of the season program evaluation and make recommendations for equipment, supplies, and program for following season.
- Accept direction, feedback from supervisors, and follow through appropriately.
- Act as a responsible member of the camp community both in and outside of the camp environment during period of employment.
- Participate in staff and other meetings, such as in‑service training and staff development and orientation activities.
- Must be present at all meals and engage with campers during meal times.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- Experience creating art lessons that are both fun and educational.
- Experience teaching art to youth in a formal or informal setting.
- Passion for promoting creativity and self‑expression among youth.
- Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
- Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior‑management techniques.
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
- Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
- Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available.
