At Kents Hill School, teachers are empowered to create innovative and engaging learning experiences that inspire students while grounding their practices in proven educational foundations. Our commitment to professional growth is unwavering: we provide personalized and meaningful professional learning opportunities that align with each educator’s unique interests, expertise, and career aspirations.

We seek a dedicated and dynamic English Teacher to join our English Department. The successful candidate will collaborate with fellow English educators to cultivate a love of literature and writing in students, while contributing to and evolving our department’s curriculum. As part of a boarding-school community, this role includes significant engagement in students’ lives beyond the classroom: residential life, advising, athletics or extracurriculars, and mentorship.

With a start date of August 15, 2026, this position offers the opportunity to impact students’ intellectual and personal growth – fostering critical thinking, creativity, cultural competence, and global awareness – while also benefiting from our school’s commitment to robust and personalized professional development.

Key Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will be:

  • an educator who inspires a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and innovation by sharing their passion for literature and writing with their students
  • able to engage students in meaningful, student-centered inquiry and writing: encourage authenticity, creativity, and depth in reading, writing, speaking, and listening
  • committed to developing in all Kents Hill students the kinds of sophisticated problem-solving and critical-thinking strategies needed for success beyond secondary education
  • able to authentically engage learners in problems that extend beyond the walls of the classroom
  • culturally competent with skills for engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • passionate about the pursuit of their own personal growth through professional development
  • enthusiastic about contributing to a shared culture of high expectations and continuous growth– for students, colleagues, and yourself
  • committed to the boarding school student experience and excited to engage with students both inside and outside of the classroom. Typically, this includes:
    • residing in campus housing and engaging in all facets of residential life
    • advising a group of students
    • involvement in afternoon and extracurricular activities

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will have:

  • experience teaching across a range of levels (from introductory to Advanced Placement), guiding students through reading, analysis, writing, the writing process, speaking, and listening
  • excellent written, interpersonal, and verbal communication skills
  • the ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, colleagues, and external partners
  • a growth mindset: eagerness to learn, reflect, and evolve as an educator, aligning with Kents Hill’s support for ongoing professional development

Kents Hill School offers its teachers a comprehensive benefits package, on-campus housing, meals in the Bibby & Harold Alfond Dining Commons for employees and their families while school is in session, and access to campus facilities and grounds, including 400 acres with a trail system, athletic facilities, and our on-campus ski hill.

Kents Hill School is committed to maintaining a work and learning environment free from discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, pregnancy, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital/civil union status, ancestry, place of birth, age, citizenship status, veteran status, political affiliation, genetic information or disability, as defined and required by state and federal laws.
