Aspiring Therapist – Learning Support Assistant

Location: Maidenhead
Start Date: February 2026
Pay: £101.40 per day
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 08:30–15:45 (term time only)
Training: Full education, training, and CPD provided

About the Role

This Learning Support Assistant role in a specialist autism school offers the opportunity to work with children and young people who have Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and complex behavioural, emotional, and communication needs. The focus is on supporting therapeutic engagement, emotional regulation, and creative interventions to help pupils develop confidence, expression, and learning outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supporting pupils 1:1 and in small groups using art, music, drama, and sensory approaches.
  • Facilitating creative, play‑based interventions to support emotional regulation, self‑expression, and social skills.
  • Observing behaviour and emotional responses to inform therapeutic approaches.
  • Using structured, visual, and sensory‑informed strategies to reduce anxiety and promote engagement.
  • Working alongside teachers, therapists, and multidisciplinary professionals to gain insight into assessment, intervention and collaborative practice.
  • Helping pupils access learning, build confidence, and achieve personal development goals.
  • Encouraging creative expression to support emotional wellbeing.
  • Supporting behavioural regulation and pro‑social skills.
  • Building safe, trusting relationships with pupils to foster engagement and confidence.
  • Contributing to a nurturing and structured environment that promotes learning, creativity, and personal growth.
Candidate Profile
  • Graduates with a passion for child development, mental health, and creative therapies.
  • Interest in pursuing Play Therapy, Art Therapy, Music Therapy, or Drama Therapy.
  • Calm, empathetic, patient when supporting children with complex needs.
  • Creative, reflective, and motivated to learn therapeutic strategies in a school setting.
  • Strong communication skills and capable of building professional, supportive relationships.
  • Prior experience supporting children or young people is helpful but not essential.
