Position: Head Lifeguard (Hourly)

Overview

Head Lifeguards at Goodman Pool oversee the daily operations of the lifeguards, ensuring that the objectives of the Aquatics Program are consistently met. This role involves enforcing strict water safety and sanitation protocols, as well as ensuring that all lifeguards adhere to these standards. In the absence of the Aquatics Supervisor, Head Lifeguards are responsible for managing the facility during their shifts.

They report directly to the Aquatics Supervisors and are expected to have a thorough understanding of aquatic procedures and how best to implement them. Key responsibilities include conflict resolution, emergency response, adhering to established facility protocols, and notifying the Aquatic Supervisor as necessary. Additionally, Head Lifeguards may occasionally be assigned to work at the city s beaches and splash parks as part of the Aquatics Program.

Current recruitment is to fill up to five (5) vacant positions.

Hours

Hours of work vary based on seasonal needs. During the peak season of May to September the Head Lifeguard will work 40 hours weekly. Hours worked in preparation for the summer season and season closing will be reduced. Work hours include early mornings, weekends, holidays, and evening hours.

Responsibilities
  • Direct the day-to-day operations of the Lifeguard staff:
    Including setting up and adjusting rotations, assigning opening and closing task, assisting lifeguards as needed.
  • Teach, demonstrate skills, and assist Lifeguards with additional practice as needed.
  • Teach weekly Lifeguard in-services:
    Including demonstrating skills and assisting Lifeguards with additional practice.
  • Take regular chemical readings and follow established protocols, including when there is an accidental fecal release.
  • Respond to emergencies according to the Emergency Action Plan, including checking on the Lifeguard, rescued person, and getting the rescued persons information.
  • Respond to Lifeguards when they signal for assistance.
  • Engage positively with patrons, addressing concerns and creating a welcoming environment. If needed, seek support from an Aquatic Supervisor for more complex situations.
  • Enforce rules, policies, procedures, and the Goodman Pool Behavior Policy as needed.
  • Ensure Lifeguard staff are meeting the expectations of the facility set forth by the Lifeguard manual, Head Lifeguard manual, and the Aquatic Management Team.
  • Attend weekly Head Lifeguard meetings and Head Lifeguard in-services.
  • Assist with first aid and emergencies as needed, up to and including calling Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
  • Perform lifeguard duties as needed.
  • Perform related work as required.
Qualifications
  • One (1) season of experience as a City of Madison Lifeguard
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid Certification
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification or ability to acquire before June 1, 2026.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Must be 18 years old by your first shift
  • Attend a minimum of 4 hours of paid in-service training each month during the summer season
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to swim 200 yards, tread water without use of hands for two (2) minutes, and retrieve a 10-pound brick from deep water
  • Ability to rescue and remove another human within the pool to safety
  • Ability to hold breath to perform rescues
