Job SummaryThis is a limited term position in the University of Wisconsin - Madison Police Lake Rescue and Safety Department. This position is responsible for overseeing day to day recreational activities of University students, staff, and the general public involving aquatic activities on Lake Mendota. Employees in this position are responsible for ensuring recreational safety by detecting and correcting unsafe boating, swimming, and other lake related practices and providing rescue assistance.
Employees work closely with campus organizations developing and implementing safety policies and are responsible for providing advisory services related to safety of existing and forecasted lake weather conditions. Individuals in this position will be involved in educational efforts to promote safe recreational practices through workshops, media communications, facility tours, and other presentations. This is a highly responsible position in public safety, requiring advanced decision making skills and excellent skills and knowledge in aquatic safety.
Work is performed under the direction of the Lifesaving Station Supervisor. The University of Wisconsin - Madison Police Lake Rescue and Safety Department is committed to the highest standard of customer relation principles for its customers, fellow staff members, and visitors. Staff will serve as role models by practicing exemplary behaviors when working with customers and fellow staff members.
- Responds to emergency situations and completes incident/accident reports according to established policies and procedures
- Operates and maintains rescue boats and equipment to assist UW and private boaters
- Maintains constant surveillance of the assigned area and monitors weather conditions
- Performs first responder skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED), First Aid, emergency medical services (EMS), and water rescue procedures

Required Qualifications- National Incident Management System IS Courses 100, 200, & 700 will be required within the first 6 months of employment.
- This position requires a valid Wisconsin Driver's License. Candidates must meet UW Risk Management Standards and have a minimum of 2 years driving experience (can be met within 3 months of hire).
- Prior boating experience preferred, but not required. Candidate must be willing to learn the required boating skills to perform the job. Experience and comfort being on the water is necessary.
- CPR/AED certification and/or First-Aid skills preferred, but not required. Employer will provide necessary training.
- Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Boaters Safety Course preferred, but not required. Employer will provide necessary training.
H.S. Diploma or GED equivalent.
