city of madison lifeguards work in the aquatics program to provide front-line safety services at goodman pool. They exercise teamwork in keeping the community safe by preventing accidents from occurring and explaining rules, policies, and procedures. Lifeguards maintain a safe, energetic, and welcoming environment for all patrons at goodman pool. As needed, lifeguards will perform lifesaving measures.
applicants 14 years of age or older are eligible to apply but must possess a valid lifeguard certification and be 15 before their first shift
hours: during the aquatic season, lifeguards will work between 10 and 40 hours weekly. Must be flexible to work varying shifts including early mornings, days, evenings, weekends, and holidays from may through august/end of season.
testing for new lifeguards: a water skills exam will be administered. The exam will cover a 200-yard swim, two (2) minute tread, brick retrieval from deep water, and testing of lifeguarding skills.
paid training lifeguard course times:
- april 4-6
- may 8-10
- may 29-31
applications will be accepted until the closing date. However, the selection process will begin prior to the closing date based upon the needs of the parks division.
the current recruitment may be up to 25 vacancies, or until the needs of the division are met.

- enforce and explain rules, policies, and procedures on a frequent basis
- resolve customer complaints
- monitor patrons to ensure their safety
- perform first aid
- attend weekly in-service training
- respond to emergencies on land and in water
- call emergency medical services (ems) as needed
- administer swim test
- manage disruptive behavior

- maintain cleanliness of facility
- clean and maintain beaches
- perform related work as required
- certification in american red cross lifeguarding (including deep water) with cpr/aed for professional rescuers and first aid.
- applicants currently enrolled in certification or courses will be considered, however cannot be scheduled to lifeguard until certification is obtained.
physical requirements
- ability to swim 200 yards, tread water without use of hands for two (2) minutes, and retrieve a 10-pound brick from deep water.
- ability to rescue and remove another human within the pool to safety.
- ability to hold breath for extended periods of time to perform rescues.
