Purpose of PositionUnder general supervision of the Manager Electrical Technology, the Electrical Technician is responsible for electrical, data (LAN/WAN), telecommunications, CCTV, door access control, fire alarm, master clock, and public address system work associated with the maintenance, repair, and remodeling of all MMSD facilities. The position requires varied working hours and availability on an emergency basis.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Complete electrical work associated with maintenance and repair activities.
- Install new electrical work associated with remodeling work.
- Visit each building frequently to test electrical equipment and complete maintenance operations.
- Maintain preventive maintenance logs and charts for electrical equipment in cooperation with building custodians.
- Research new products, procedures, services, and equipment.
- Troubleshoot building electrical systems problems and make recommendations and cost estimates for solutions.
- Participate in hands‑on repairs, installation, and maintenance.
- Obtain required electrical building permits.
- Estimate and procure materials.
- Install clocks, public address, control, data, telephone, communication, CCTV, door access control, and fire alarm wiring.
- Maintain records of materials and labor associated with assigned work and develop and maintain a work schedule.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Work cooperatively and effectively with co‑workers, contractors, technical consultants, students, and the public.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local codes, regulations, and ordinances related to construction activities and specifically electrical work.
- Knowledge of electrical layout and estimating procedures.
- Ability to perform electrical rough‑in work and electrical wiring.
- Ability to work construction plans, shop drawings, and material specifications.
- Skill in troubleshooting electrical in‑service work for motors, panels, lights, etc.
- Recognized as a journeyman electrician by an appropriate authority or documented training and experience equivalent to a journeyman.
- Graduate of a recognized apprentice program for electrician or equivalent training and experience.
- Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and personal vehicle.
- The job is physically demanding – medium to heavy work.
- Constant standing, walking, moving, pushing, pulling loads up to 70+ pounds.
- Frequent bending, stooping, lifting loads up to 50+ pounds, ladder and stair climbing, able to handle heights up to 30 ft.
- Frequent sitting, driving, squatting, crouching, crawling, reaching, kneeling, repetitive movements with both hands.
- Verbal and auditory communication is frequently used; vision acuity and sensory functions are regularly utilized.
- Work under safe and comfortable conditions with minimal environmental risk.
- Work in indoor and outdoor environments year‑round, including inclement weather and temperatures that may fluctuate.
