Brief Description

The Overhead Service Technician is a front‑line employee with direct customer contact and is a valued, essential part of the company’s success; in addition to technical skills, people skills are vital for effective customer relationship management and decision‑making.

Responsibilities

  • Perform on‑site repairs on overhead cranes and hoists at customers’ facilities as directed by the Service Supervisor (or Service Manager).
  • Conduct planned maintenance and repairs on all types of crane and hoist systems.
  • Respond to emergency breakdown call‑outs as directed by the service supervisor, including after‑hours and weekend availability.
  • Conduct extensive on‑site electrical, electronic, mechanical, and structural troubleshooting to determine the root cause for equipment malfunctions or failures and establish the necessary repairs using visual inspections, testing procedures, and appropriate testing equipment.
  • Maintain a basic understanding and working knowledge of all OSHA, ANSI, CMAA, and other codes or regulations pertaining to the crane service industry; be able to obtain specific regulations if requested.
  • Apply proficient knowledge of electrical theory for power and controls, mechanical systems of cranes/hoists, and simple structural elements.
  • Complete daily paperwork accurately and completely—including time tickets, service reports, inspection reports, expense reports, and sales lead generation forms.
  • Review completed repairs with the customer and obtain their signature on the daily service report indicating acceptance of proper work.
  • Maintain all company equipment and tools in compliance with manufacturer recommendations and certifications, such as vehicles, forklifts, man lifts, and operating machinery.
  • Maintain a proper stock level of inventory and line‑stock items on the service vehicle.
  • Keep a stock of the appropriate forms and literature on the service vehicle and use the proper documentation and forms used by the service department.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and image at all times.
  • Communicate regularly with the local office and/or call in a minimum of once per day to the service supervisor.
  • Exhibit excellent people skills to communicate with inter‑company personnel and customers and promote strong customer relationships.
  • Maintain Quality Assurance Standards.
  • Collect, develop, and formalize information for proposals of all replacement and repair opportunities and forward them to the Service Supervisor or Service Manager.
  • Keep training assignments current.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education

A high school diploma, vocational‑technical school, crane training program, trade school, equivalent military experience, or technical college training program preferred.

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum 2‑year crane maintenance experience, including periodic annual inspections preferred.
  • Experience with industrial HVAC controls and automation.
  • Knowledge of all safety standards/regulations as they relate to crane maintenance.
  • Understanding of AC/DC theory and ability to troubleshoot 480 VAC.
  • Experience with 3‑phase motor control systems preferred.
  • Experience with variable frequency drives preferred.
  • Previous overhead crane service experience preferred but not required.
  • Willingness to stay educated in the crane industry; be computer‑literate and technologically savvy.
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing that meets company requirements.
  • Ability for heavy lifting/pulling (minimum 75 lbs.) due to nature of duties.
  • Ability to work at heights greater than six feet.
  • Standard schedule is 40 hours per week but must be able to work varied hours, overtime, and on‑call as required to meet customer needs.
  • Travel required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  • Strong analytical, conceptual, and planning skills.
  • Excellent math skills and overall PC literacy (Microsoft Office).
  • Detail‑oriented, self‑motivated, and disciplined with the ability to multi‑task.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal background check, physical, drug screen, and e‑verify.
