HVAC Tech / Heating Engineer, Building Maintenance
Purpose of Position
Under general supervision of the Facilities Engineering Manager and Assistant Director of Maintenance, this position is responsible for a wide variety of duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, air conditioning, and temperature control systems in all Madison Metropolitan School District facilities. The position requires varied working hours and availability on an emergency basis.
Location & CompensationLocation:
Pflaum Road Building, Madison Metropolitan School District. Building Services. Hourly wage: $55.00 – $66.45.
- Maintenance and Repair – 85%
- Perform HVAC work associated with maintenance and repair activities
- Install new HVAC equipment or programs associated with remodeling or new construction work
- Service and maintain low‑pressure steam and hot water boilers
- Install, maintain and repair DDC and pneumatic controls
- Troubleshoot, install and set up Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)
- Administrative work – 10%: assist in estimating labor, materials and supplies; maintain records of materials and labor; visit each building frequently and be familiar with HVAC systems and components
- Other duties as assigned – 5%: perform duties assigned by executive leadership; attend district and school functions; complete required training; build collaborative relationships with business partners
- Demonstrated ability to establish relationships at all levels of the organization

- Ability to install, troubleshoot and repair HVAC refrigeration equipment and possess required Wisconsin certification
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local codes, regulations and ordinances related to HVAC work
- Knowledge of major types of HVAC installations and common repair procedures
- Experience with pneumatic, electronic, and DDC controls and Building Automation System interfaces
- Ability to read wiring diagrams and troubleshoot HVAC control problems
- Knowledge of state safety requirements, codes, and general orders of the Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations
- Ability to read, interpret and work from construction plans, shop drawings, and material specifications
- Skill in all common tools of the HVAC trade; knowledge of HVAC rough‑in work
- Proven ability to work cooperatively with coworkers, contractors, consultants, students and the public
- Experience working in refrigeration services
- Experience working cross‑culturally and commitment to cultural competence (e.g., valuing difference, recognizing personal limitations, and desire to learn in these areas)
- Valid Wisconsin Driver's License
- Journey worker Steamfitter License/Certification
- EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigerant Handling Technician Certification
- State of Wisconsin "HVAC Qualifier Certification" preferred
Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury.
This position requires frequent lifting up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting up to 70 pounds. It may require being stationary for extended periods, frequent sitting, driving, squatting, crouching, ladder and stair climbing, handling heights up to 30 ft, crawling, reaching, kneeling, and repetitive movements with both hands.
Near and far vision acuity, depth perception, accommodation, field of vision, and feeling are frequently utilized. Verbal and auditory communication is frequently used. Ability to perform work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year, including in inclement weather and areas where temperatures fluctuate rapidly.
Working Conditions- May involve exposure to asbestos and lead‑based surfaces
- Travel to different locations within the district and to off‑site meetings
- Required working evenings, nights, and some weekends
- Certain positions may allow remote/work‑from‑home flexibility for a portion of the schedule, discussed in the interview process
- School‑based positions required to be in‑person unless otherwise directed by the building principal
