About the Opportunity
This research opportunity is offered by the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) in collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Wildlife Health Center. The project, titled “USGS Thermal Disease Dynamics in Wildlife Hosts,” focuses on studying the relationship between disease dynamics and temperature in wildlife, particularly amphibians affected by a fungal skin pathogen.
Research ProjectThe objective is to measure the infection dynamics and functional immunity of amphibian hosts by:
- Measuring the growth rate of the fungal pathogen on the host
- Evaluating the host’s ability to resist infection
- Assessing the consequences of infection on host populations
This research integrates controlled laboratory experiments with studies in natural settings, using molecular and microbiological methods.
Learning Objectives & MethodsUnder the guidance of mentor Daniel Grear (dgrear), you will gain hands‑on experience in:
- Detection and quantification of micro‑organisms using quantitative and conventional PCR
- Preparation of culture media and cultivation of microorganisms
- In vivo research techniques using wild animals
- Bioinformatic data processing
- Study design and scientific communication
The appointment is full time for an initial period of one year with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability. The anticipated start date is as soon as possible.
Candidates must be U.S. citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents, and should be currently pursuing or have recently received a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in areas such as Zoology, Biology, Ecology, or related fields. The degree should have been received within the past 18 months or be anticipated by May 1, 2026.
