Overview
Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.
As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides after school enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. After school clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Description:
MSCR Outdoor Programs offer dynamic and engaging experiential and environmental education opportunities for students, community members and corporate clients. Our mission is to empower and facilitate individual and group transformation through experiential learning by providing positive outdoor experiences. We do this through activities including paddling, environmental education, and teambuilding. Paid professional development and training are provided to help build your skills, scheduling is flexible, and you get to join a great group of Outdoor Programs instructors.
Job Description & DutiesThe Outdoor Programs Paddling Coordinator directly supports all paddling programs by running staff training, managing equipment, leading programs, and evolving paddling program offerings. Working collaboratively with the MSCR Outdoor Programs Specialist and two other Program Coordinators, this role helps support overall operations of MSCR Outdoor Programs.
Duties Include:
- Planning and implementing Canoe and Kayak staff trainings with support from the MSCR Program Specialist
- Maintain gear and equipment including maintenance, purchasing, organizing, and record keeping
- Act as lead facilitator for paddling programs including trailering boats to multiple program locations around the city of Madison, supervising/delegating responsibilities to outdoor program instructors, and maintain safe operating procedures for outdoor programming on the water
- Assist with recruitment, hiring, and evaluation of outdoor program instructions
- Assist with promotion of programs and recruitment of participants
- Maintain knowledge of current experiential and outdoor program trends in paddle sports
- Able to be self-motivated, working both independently and with a group, to manage multiple job responsibilities and various scheduling commitments
Position start date ASAP with a strong preference for a start date by March 16th. Staff training begins March 23rd and paddling programs begin mid-April with programs running through the end of November.
Workload & CompensationOpportunities to work up to 40hrs/wk during program season and up to 18.5 hrs/wk during non-program season.
- Work Hours:
Varies depending on programs, can include week day(s) and weekend(s) and programming can take place between the hours of 6:00am-9:00pm. - Pay Rate: $21- $25 /hour
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions for up to 8 hours
- Physical ability to stand/sit for extended periods and lift/carry up to 50lbs
- Previous experience facilitating outdoor paddle sports for youth and adults
- Strong organizational skills, detail oriented, and recreation program planning experience
- Strong communication and customer skills both verbally and in writing
- Comfortability with directing staff on positive, safe operations for paddle sports
- Experience with implementing risk management skills in outdoor program settings
- Reliable transportation to program site location(s)
- Enthusiasm for facilitating and learning in the outdoors with all ages
- Certified or able to obtain certification in CPR/AED/First Aid
- Commitment to the mission and vision of MSCR and the goals of MSCR Outdoor Programs
- Prior supervisory experience in paddle sports or other outdoor experiential education environment
- Prior experience training staff to lead and assist in offering paddle sports or other outdoor program areas
- Certified in paddle sports with American Canoe Association or prior experience to attest to leading outdoor programming
- Prior experience hauling equipment including trailering canoes/kayaks
- Certified or willing to be certified in Wilderness and Remote First Aid or First Responder
- Secondary language skills in Spanish and/or Hmong highly desired
