Clinical Nurse Specialist / RN-Nurse Specialist – Inpatient Surgical Services
Join our inpatient operating room nursing staff at University Hospital as a Clinical Nurse Specialist or RN‑Nurse Specialist. This 100% FTE salaried position typically works weekdays during day shift hours, with occasional off‑hours or weekend coverage as needed. The role is based onsite at University Hospital in Madison, WI.
Responsibilities- Provide clinical expertise and nursing practice support to the inpatient operating room nursing staff.
- Act as a clinical expert for specific clinical populations, leveraging a minimum of three (3) years of intra‑operative/operating‑room nursing experience (leadership experience preferred).
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team (surgery, anesthesia, surgical technology) to address acute and chronic disease processes and support evidence‑based practice and quality‑improvement initiatives.
- 25 standard operating rooms, an intra‑operative MRI suite, two neurosurgery/interventional radiology hybrid ORs, and one vascular hybrid OR equipped with cutting‑edge technology, including two Da Vinci robots.
- Team STEPPS is implemented to enhance teamwork and communication.
- Salary is prorated based on full‑time (100%) FTE and is within the combined pay range for both job titles.

- RN‑Nurse Specialist
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) – required.
- Master’s degree in Nursing or a doctoral degree (DNP) within five (5) years – required.
- 3 years of relevant clinical nursing experience – required.
- Experience as a nurse specialist or in an expanded role – preferred.
- Experience in an academic medical center – preferred.
- Clinical Nurse Specialist
- Master’s or doctoral degree in Nursing – required.
- Master’s or doctoral degree (DNP or PhD) with CNS role focus – preferred.
- 2 years of relevant clinical nursing experience – required.
- 3 years of relevant clinical nursing experience – preferred.
- Previous experience as a clinical nurse specialist – preferred.
- Experience in an academic medical center – preferred.
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin or a compact‑adopting jurisdiction – required.
- Basic Life Support (CPR/BLS) certification – required.
- CNS certification – preferred.
- Specialty area of practice certification – preferred.
