Overview
The Department of Health Services (DHS), Mendota Mental Health Institute (MMHI) is recruiting a Power Plant Operator-Senior. This position typically works the overnight shift (11pm-7am) with weekends on a three on/three off rotation for both positions. MMHI is located on the north side of Madison with a campus environment, free parking, and an onsite workout facility. MMHI is an inpatient psychiatric facility, with one outpatient program, serving patients with complex psychiatric conditions and related behaviors.

- Safely operate natural gas or oil-fired boilers, including routine testing, inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
- Perform lockout and tagout procedures to ensure equipment is shut down and inoperable during maintenance or repair work.
The starting pay is $27.91/hour, plus excellent benefits. A 12-month probationary period is required. An $0.80/hour night differential and an $0.80/hour weekend differential applies to worked shifts.
Pay for current or former state employees will be set based on applicable compensation rules. This position is in pay schedule and range 03/15.
Job Details and RequirementsAll applicants will be required to allow DHS to conduct a background check. All appointees will be required to receive a TB test prior to their start date. This position has physical requirements which may include lifting up to 50 lbs., standing, kneeling, bending, crawling, twisting, and lifting. Applicants must pass a physical evaluation. Overtime may be required. DHS does not sponsor work visas for this position.
Selected candidates must verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the I-9 form upon hire. DHS is not an E-Verify employer nor a STEM-OPT eligible employer.
Minimally qualified applicants will have the following:
- Ability to work scheduled hours as needed, including weekends, holidays, early mornings or early evenings, and overtime as needed.
- Experience performing general maintenance and repairs using basic power tools, hand tools, and motorized equipment (e.g., fire alarms, locks, plumbing, electrical repairs, etc.).
