Overview
Dane County offers a wide range of benefits including fully paid dental and HMO health insurance premiums for full-time employees and pro-rated for part-time employees. The County provides contributions toward POS health insurance premiums and short/long term disability. Employees hired after 7-1-11 must be expected to work a minimum of 1200 hours annually to be enrolled in the Wisconsin Retirement System when hired. Dane County also provides 6 weeks of paid parental leave for birth or adoption of a child.
Benefits and Pay HighlightsFull-time WI Certified Law Enforcement Officers who are hired with Dane County as Deputies will receive an hour-for-hour match of their sick leave balance up to 1800 hours. Sick leave balances are cashed out upon retirement and placed in a health savings account for health insurance and related expenses. Your years of service can be converted into longevity credits with Dane County.
Hourly pay, incentives and vacation credits are based on longevity credits.
Under direction, perform a full range of police duties necessary to enforce the law, investigate complaints, maintain order, supervise jail residents, aid individuals in danger, identify offenders, apprehend offenders, resolve conflict, facilitate movement of people and vehicles, and provide other police services as required. Specific duty examples include:
- Processes persons booked into jail; maintains security of residents and monitors health and welfare; inspects housing units; searches property; conducts hourly security checks; assist nursing staff with medication; monitor for suspicious activity; prepare activity reports; enforce jail rules; respond to emergencies in the jail; assist with mental health crises and medical emergencies; escorts residents to visits; check incoming mail for contraband;
assist in meal service; serve as a witness in court; de-escalate conflicts using communication skills. - Enforce traffic laws, respond to emergencies, investigate criminal activity, and handle non-criminal calls (e.g., family disputes); operate speed detection equipment and other devices; inspect establishments and property for illegal activity; identify hazards and respond appropriately; maintain contact with the department and report occurrences; participate in community events and law enforcement programs.

Minimum Qualifications and Standards
High school graduation or equivalent and two years of full-time college attendance or two years of full-time work experience (military service considered as work experience). Must be a minimum of 21 years of age t meet State Law Enforcement Standards Board education requirements within five years of hire.
Special Requirements
- U.S. citizen; valid Wisconsin driver’s license (or eligibility) with good driving record; no criminal convictions; availability for night and weekend assignments and 24-hour on-call status.
Physical Requirements
- Excellent physical condition; weight proportional to height; binocular vision correctable to 20/20 with normal peripheral vision; no significant eye disease; normal hearing; standard muscular strength, joint flexibility and coordination.
Post-Employment Education Standard
If not achieved prior to employment, all Deputy Sheriffs must attain within five years either a two-year associate degree or sixty fully accredited college credits. Completion of the academy may contribute up to 16 credits toward this requirement. Failure to meet the requirement may result in termination. This is a State of Wisconsin certification requirement.
Pre-Employment Standard
To gain entrance into the 720-hour Basic Law Enforcement Academy, you must successfully complete the State-required Physical Readiness Test with the following minimums: 1.5 mile run 20:20 or less; 300 meter run 82 seconds or less; 18 push-ups; 24 sit-ups; vertical jump 11.5 inches; agility run 23.4 seconds.
