Messenger Introduction
The Messenger is a full-time, nonpartisan position within the Senate Sergeant at Arms’ Office. The Messenger performs a broad range of clerical tasks/errands for Senators, Senate staff, and the general public that support the operation of the Senate. The work is performed under close supervision of the Sergeant at Arms, Deputy Sergeant at Arms, and Operations Officer.

Job Details- Act as the point of contact for all errands from Senate offices and Legislative Service Agencies.
- Deliver messages and other documents to Senators/Senate offices, meeting rooms, and other state government entities.
- Collate printed materials and assist with the preparation of documents for legislative use.
- Operate audio-visual equipment.
- Register speakers and visitors at public hearings.
- Prepare capitol meeting rooms for committee and caucus work.
- Enforce the rules of the Senate gallery and assist/guide visitors to the Senate gallery.
- Monitor access to the Senate floor during session by checking identification at the chamber’s entrance and restricting access for all unauthorized individuals.
- Guide members of the media to appropriate location within the chamber.
- Aid in providing training and leadership for LTE Messengers.
- Assist in safely leading Dome Tours.
- Assist with other tasks/errands, as directed.
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
- Ability to work in a nonpartisan environment.
- Ability to accurately deliver confidential and time sensitive messages.
- Ability to staff Senate committee meetings.
- Ability to operate audio-visual equipment.
- Ability to maintain order and decorum of the Senate Chamber and committee meetings, as directed by the presiding officer and/or Sergeant at Arms.
- Ability to uphold security protocols.
- Ability to appropriately navigate adversarial social interactions.
- Ability to lead a small team of co-workers to perform specialized tasks.
- Knowledge of the Capitol Building and its history.
- Ability to maintain a working knowledge of printers.
- Ability to scan and fax information.
- Ability to collate printed materials.
- Ability to uphold the culture and professionalism of the Senate.
- Knowledge of the legislative process.
- Ability to work independently and simultaneously manage a variety of tasks and projects.
- Ability to be highly productive and meet deadlines under stressful conditions.
- Ability to operate in a professional and confidential manner, while working with Senators and Senate staff in the performance of assigned duties.
- Ability to work occasional late nights and/or weekends.
- Graduate of a high school or an equivalent certification is required.
- Repetitive movement of hands and fingers – typing and/or writing.
- Occasional to frequent sitting, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching.
- Reach with hands and arms.
- Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
