Introduction
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Bureau of Vehicle Services (BVS), Motor Carrier Services Section is currently recruiting to fill a Fuel Tax and Registration Auditor vacancy.
This position offers a hybridized work schedule. The position will be headquartered at and required to work from the Hill Farms State Office Building (4822 Madison Yards Way, Madison, WI) at least 2 days per week. The initial training and mentoring may require more in‑office days and additional flexibility within standard business hours. All employees working a hybrid work schedule are generally expected to telework from within the State of Wisconsin.

Position SummaryThis position is responsible for conducting audits of interstate motor carrier fuel tax‑related records, operations, or other motor‑carrier related audits. These audits verify the accuracy of fuel tax and registration fee payments due to the State of Wisconsin and other members of the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and the International Registration Plan (IRP) from Wisconsin‑based carriers, documenting the audits, and completing written audit reports.
The audits assess compliance of the motor carrier with record‑keeping requirements of the Agreement and determine whether the correct fuel tax and registration fees have been paid to Wisconsin and each IFTA jurisdiction based on mileage operated and fuel consumed, or on IRP jurisdiction based on mileage operated. The work performed ensures that the proper amounts of revenue are collected and encourages continued motor carrier participation in revenue‑generating fuel tax and registration fee systems.
Audits will include examining the operational records of the motor carrier, establishing facts of the vehicle operations and fuel purchases, and reviewing transactions, mileage documents, records, reports, and internal controls for accuracy, effectiveness, and compliance with the provisions of the IFTA and the IRP. The Fuel Tax and Registration Auditor will develop a written report of the findings, recommendations, and necessary action for multiple audiences.
Revenues generated for the Transportation Fund from IRP registration fees exceed $60 million annually. Revenues from fuel tax collection are estimated to exceed $18 million annually.
Salary InformationThis position is in schedule‑range (07‑04) with an annual salary of $52,246 – $63,440 ($26.08 – $30.50 per hour), plus excellent benefits. A twelve‑month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.
