Our Madison, WI office seeks a Field Engineer I to join our growing Transportation Construction Engineering team.

Primary Focus Will Include
  • Construction engineering and inspection of large highway and bridge construction projects in the Madison area and throughout southwest Wisconsin
  • Collaborating with the Transportation Construction Services team and project stakeholders to perform inspection, documentation, and materials verification

This opportunity entails construction inspection and materials testing on large highway and bridge construction projects throughout Wisconsin. The selected candidate will be responsible for providing daily inspection of multiple, complex activities within a given discipline/trade performed by the contractor in order to monitor the project compliance with plans, specifications and other contract provisions. Maintains daily logs of inspection work which is assigned and reviews discrepancies or changes with the Project Engineer.

Performs non‑routine and moderately complex assignments normally related to multiple and/or medium to large projects. Collaborates with the HNTB Transportation Construction Services team and project stakeholders to perform on‑site inspection, documentation, and materials verification.

What You’ll Do
  • Assist with construction field work tasks and activities on a project to ensure conformance to plans, specifications, and other contract documents. Coordinate and schedule quality controls inspections.
  • Observe on‑site material testing and coordinate testing and monitoring services. Perform mathematical calculations for material quantity payments. Perform basic shop drawing review and ensure that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications and identify discrepancies or conflicts within the documents.
  • Review contractor’s daily construction reports for accuracy, thoroughness and consistency. Regularly review contractor's as‑built mark‑ups, document project progress using video and photo and prepare reports on construction progress.
  • Consult with Resident Engineer on work progress and construction problems, proactively recommend solutions, assist in the resolution of issues, and act as a liaison with the engineer of record.
  • Remain current and knowledgeable of industry technology and tools used to perform inspection work through industry resources, training, and research. Gain exposure to new technology and utilize it (GPS/Rovers) to increase efficiency and accuracy of inspection tasks.
  • Perform office engineer work when needed including but not limited to: prepare meeting agendas and meeting minutes, assist in processing and maintain tracking logs for RFIs, submittals, pay estimates and other deliverables.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
What You’ll Bring
  • Identify some discrepancies or conflicts within documents and gain familiarity with the quality of work performed using inspection checklists.
  • Write daily inspection report, track work performed, and compute pay item quantities at a basic level with direction from more experienced staff.
  • Understand the shop drawing review and gain the ability to read and interpret the contractor’s CPM schedule at a basic level.
What We Prefer
  • Engineer in Training (EIT)
  • Trained in digital construction management software such as Constructware, Asite or similar preferred.
