Overview
Dane County Waste & Renewables in Madison, WI has a current vacancy for a Limited Term Employee (LTE) Solid Waste Engineer.
Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.
Note to applicants – for the 2026 budget year, there is a 1% reduction in wages. This is already reflected in the hourly wage above.

Dane County owns and operates the County’s landfills, household hazardous waste collection site, a construction and demolition recycling facility, various other recycling programs, and a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Plant that converts landfill gas to pipeline quality RNG. The department’s goals include increased waste minimization, diversion, recycling, and beneficial use and the intent is to achieve this with the development of a sustainable business park, or Sustainability Campus.
This classification is responsible for project management and engineering duties for the Department of Waste & Renewables including landfill, recycling, and compost facility design, construction, operations and maintenance.
Provide technical engineering and project management support. Plan, organize, oversee and supervise the work of internal and external parties involved in the design, construction, and execution of construction projects. Develop and issue bid specifications, construction drawings, requests for quotes, bids, and proposals, contracts, contract change orders, contract amendments, and assist in updating budgets. Collaborate with architects, engineers, and construction contractors and act as the County’s project liaison.
Respond to work delays, emergencies, and other issues that may arise during construction. Perform surveying, technical engineering, and construction documentation, to ensure project complies with all building and safety codes, and project is properly documented to ensure accurate as-builts. This classification will also be assigned a broad spectrum of responsibilities including, but not limited to, financial management, contract administration, and internal and external team leadership for a variety of department projects.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training, and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
Special RequirementsMust have a valid driver’s license, a good driving record and access to reliable personal transportation, or equivalent. Must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and during emergencies or unexpected maintenance events. Must be able to be on-call for night and weekend work. Certifications/LicensesWDNR Solid Waste Facility Manager and nuclear density gauge training and certification must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire.
