Department Overview:
Academic Advising Services and the L&S Honors Program are hiring students to serve as L&S SOAR Academic Peer Advisors to help support the College of Letters & Science's summer orientation and advising program. Academic Advising Services (AAS) works with incoming first-year and transfer students in L&S until they declare a major. The L&S Honors Program works with incoming L&S students admitted to the Honors in the Liberal Arts track.
We welcome applications from all eligible students and seek to build a peer advising team that reflects the diversity of students in L&S. Equity and inclusion are essential for the well-being of our campus community and for addressing systemic inequities in higher education. We welcome, affirm, and celebrate all students, their identities, and lived experiences.

Schedule:
Required Training
- Dates:
May 18-22 and May 26-28, with the possible addition of June 1 - Hours:
9 AM-12 PM and 1 PM-4 PM each day
Required In-Person SOAR
Hours:
- Dates:
June 2-26;
July 13-24; and August 3-7 - Hours:
Tuesdays–Fridays: 8 AM-12:30 PM. Some Monday mornings as scheduled. - Peer advisors will be scheduled within the 8:00 AM–12:30 PM window but may be released early some days.
- No SOAR work hours on weekends or from June 29–July 3.

L&S SOAR Academic Peer Advisors can take summer classes or hold other jobs, but commitments must not conflict with required training or SOAR in-person hours. Potential conflicts must be disclosed and approved by the supervisors prior to accepting the employment offer.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum: $15.00
Number of Positions:
Approximately 18-22 positions:
Up to 18 general L&S academic peer advisors;
Up to 3 L&S Honors peer advisors;
One L&S position may work with incoming School of Music students.
- Be an undergraduate student during the Spring 2026 term
- Will continue as an undergraduate or graduate student for Summer 2026 or Fall 2026
- Have a declared or intended major in L&S
- By May 2026, have completed at least two undergraduate semesters with at least one at UW–Madison
- Have a commitment to welcoming all students and building an inclusive UW–Madison community
- To be considered for the L&S Honors Academic Peer Advisor position, applicants must have completed or be currently enrolled in at least one Honors course. Applications from students who are currently declared members of the L&S Honors Program, especially those pursuing Honors in the Liberal Arts, will be strongly prioritized.

Position Summary/Job Duties
:
- L&S SOAR Academic Peer Advisors help new students transition into the College of Letters & Science by providing academic orientation and supporting Fall 2026 course enrollment
- Peer advisors work both collaboratively with L&S staff to guide students through degree requirements, enrollment tools, and campus resources
- The role offers experience in higher education while strengthening communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and presentation skills
- Comprehensive training and ongoing professional development are provided
