Purpose of the Position: Support special education teachers by providing individualized support to students with disabilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide instructional support and reinforcement to students in academic, behavioral, and functional areas across school, community, and vocational settings.
  • Implement curriculum and behavioral intervention strategies under the direction of a teacher and/or related services staff.
  • Assist with transfers, adaptive devices, tube feedings, diapering, and provide bathroom assistance and mobility training.
  • Follow proper hygiene practices as prescribed by MMSD health policies.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other staff to provide feedback regarding student performance.
  • Collect and document student progress data (academic and behavior).
  • Monitor and implement positive behavior strategies, physical restraint/management, safe space procedures, and behavior intervention plans.
  • Supervise students during lunch, recess, playground, hallways, and field trips.
  • Participate in on‑the‑job training and district‑level training.
  • Assist with loading and unloading school buses.
  • Prepare instructional materials under a teacher’s direction.
  • Maintain records and a daily schedule of support.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Provide individual and small group instructional reinforcement.
  • Work independently with students in various settings under teacher direction.
  • Maintain accurate student data and confidentiality.
  • Work with physically aggressive students and those who are nonverbal or have limited speech.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse students, staff, and community, orally and in writing.
  • Perform physical tasks including walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), climbing, bending, reaching, and kneeling.
  • Use basic computer skills (e‑mail, internet, word processing).
  • Demonstrate maturity, patience, and compassion.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience working cross‑culturally and/or commitment to improving cultural competence.
  • Department of Public Instruction Special Education Program Aide License (may apply during/after offer; cost covered by district).
  • Associate’s Degree or 48 academic credits beyond high school, or pass assessment submitted on site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or 48 academic credits beyond high school.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Prior experience in a public school setting.
  • Experience working with children who have disabilities, are non‑ambulatory, or non‑verbal.
  • CPR certification.
  • First aid training.
  • Proficiency with email, internet, and word processing.

Working Conditions:
