The Vice Provost for Enrollment Management (VPEM) provides leadership in planning, developing, executing, and assessing a strategic undergraduate enrollment management plan for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The VPEM is responsible for organizing and creating a vision for the Division of Enrollment Management (DEM). The units currently within the Division, including Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment, Student Financial Aid, and Registrar, as well as an applied research unit (SSTAR Lab), provide foundational support and services for the academic infrastructure throughout the student lifecycle.
The mission of the Division of Enrollment Management is to attract, enroll, and support the most talented students. The Division consists of over 200 full-time employees, 50 part-time employees and 130 student employees; it has an operating budget of $25.6 million and administers a financial aid program consisting of federal, state, institutional, and private funds that exceed $600 million annually.
The VPEM is responsible for providing an administrative infrastructure that documents student learning and success from recruitment through graduation and beyond. As part of the overall management of the various units, the VPEM will provide supervision and guidance to the division's directors, which will involve promoting best practices in hiring and retention, performance management (individual annual performance reviews), review of professional development plans, work area plans, and progress reports in accordance with UW System and campus policies.
The incumbent is responsible for ensuring effective communication, dissemination of information, and proactive program development within the offices.
The VPEM serves on the Provost's leadership team and, in collaboration with colleagues under the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration and in the Office of Data, Academic Planning and Institutional Research (DAPIR), leads the development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of the undergraduate enrollment management strategy that includes attracting and retaining successful UW-Madison undergraduate students and aligns with University priorities and adheres to the wider policy environment.
The VPEM will work closely with the provost and other campus leaders to develop and implement enrollment strategies driven by institutional priorities and provide leadership in fulfilling the University's recruitment and retention goals.
The VPEM oversees the management of the DEM budgets and develops best practices and procedures that allow the division not only to meet its administrative obligations and maintain a balanced budget, but to creatively introduce new initiatives in alignment with the goals and objectives of campus leadership. The VPEM also works closely with other campus leaders, including the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, to assess and, as necessary, modify existing and develop new approaches to the undergraduate student experience and student success.
The ideal candidate will be a creative, experienced leader who is able to serve as an effective spokesperson for the mission, vision, and goals of the DEM, as well as the University.
Highly qualified candidates will have senior-level experience in enrollment management, with a record of increasing responsibility, including expertise and skills in most of the following areas:
- Active participation and leadership shaping current conversations guiding the field of enrollment management, with particular knowledge and awareness of legislation and compliance requirements affecting student recruitment, retention, and financial aid.
- Proven record of working collaboratively with key campus and unit leaders in managing student enrollment and recruitment to meet the strategic goals of campus and schools/colleges.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in interpreting, influencing, and applying board of trustees and university higher education policies and procedures. Experience implementing, interpreting, and complying with current federal rules and policies such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Higher Education Act (HEA) and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) at a complex and comprehensive university in an ever-changing and dynamic landscape.
