Overview
Academic Advisor role at UW-Madison College of Engineering. This position supports undergraduate academic advising, student services, and related programs within the College of Engineering.
Job Duties- Serve as a main point of contact for students and provide information about educational options and academic requirements; assist with identifying interests, skills, and values to match appropriate fields of study and career options; refer students to appropriate institutional resources.
- Support the College of Engineering undergraduate academic affairs unit and academic departments on programming and initiatives, including curricular management, outreach, recruitment, and scholarship recruitment efforts.
- Promote inclusive excellence in advising practices and contribute to a climate of equity for students and colleagues.
- Proactively engage students as needed.
- Maintain expertise with advised curriculum and assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum where appropriate.
- Maintain confidentiality and accurate student records and respond to inquiries according to FERPA and institutional policies.
- Implement academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers.
- Participate in the campus advising community and provide input to leadership on advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college.
- Receive, process, and respond to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures.
The undergraduate academic advising office is part of the College of Engineering's academic affairs unit, including academic advising, the Engineering Student Center, career services, student leadership, scholarships, and student wellness.
CompensationThe starting salary is $55,000, negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Benefits include vacation, holidays, sick leave, competitive insurance, savings accounts, and retirement benefits. See the campus benefits webpage for more information.
Required Qualifications- At least one year of experience post-bachelor’s degree in one of the following: student services in higher or secondary education; teaching in higher or secondary education; professional experience in engineering or an engineering-related field; or professional experience in counseling.
- Academic advising experience in higher education.
- Experience with engineering, math, physical/biological/natural sciences, or related fields at higher education or secondary education levels.
- Experience collaborating on teams to create, implement, or deliver projects or programming.
- Experience presenting information to diverse audiences in multiple formats.
- Commitment to increasing access in science, technology, and engineering; ability to work with diverse student populations.
- Understanding of engineering curricula and ability to relate that understanding to students.
- Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism in communications with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
- Excellent written, verbal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse community in a responsive and caring manner.
- Adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic environment.
Bachelor’s degree required (preferred in engineering, social science, physical/natural sciences, or related field). Master’s degree preferred (preferred in engineering, counseling and/or adult and higher education, social science, physical/natural science, or related field).
