Overview
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy - English Language Proficiency
- In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) - no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
- The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
- Residency Training:
Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification - Note:
VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies include: (1) ACGME; (2) AOA; or (3) other residencies followed by five years of verified practice in the United States as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee - Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a restricted scope of practice under supervision
- Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
- Preferred Experience and
Certifications:

- Physical Requirements:
Eligible applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation and without hazard to themselves or others - Depending on the duties, usable vision, color vision, hearing or speech may be required; some conditions may be compensated by prosthesis or mechanical aids
- OUTPATIENT/GENERAL MENTAL HEALTH (GMH):
This position is part of a clinical team with duties divided between program development, patient care and educational programming, including collaboration with our nationally recognized inter-professional education program - GMH team focuses on team-based, evidence-driven care and uses outcome measures to ensure the best care for Veterans

- If qualified, a faculty appointment in the University of Wisconsin Department of Psychiatry may be possible
- ADDICTIONS:
The Madison VA uses an interdisciplinary team model; psychiatrists in this position are core members of the treatment team - Opportunity to serve Veterans in an Outpatient Mental Health and Addictions Treatment Clinic and to teach and engage in research if desired
- Great opportunity for a physician to be at the forefront of evidence-based, interdisciplinary and Veteran-centered addictions treatment
- Direct services include: individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, medication assessment and management, consultation to other medical and nursing providers on psychiatric issues, behavioral interventions, referral facilitation to Behavioral Health Service programs, records management and statistical data collection
- Participates in service and facility committees and projects to ensure compliance with directives and goals and to improve Veteran care
- Identifies gaps in services and works to resolve them
- Provides staff development, training and direction to Behavioral Health staff, interns, volunteers and others as directed
- Provides educational presentations to staff on topics relevant to care and management of patients with mental disorders in the primary care environment
