Summary

The purpose of the position is to provide comprehensive telephone and telecommunications support to all facilities and customers. The position is located within the Centralized Attendant Center at the William S. Middleton Memorial Hospital – Madison, WI.

Qualifications

To qualify for this role at the GS‑5 level you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Specialized Experience
    :
    At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS‑4) in federal service that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform as a Telecommunications Equipment Operator. Experience may include providing routine information, receiving and directing callers, general clerical and referral services, connecting calls using telecommunications systems, maintaining records, and operating computer systems.

    Applicants must clearly describe their duties, responsibilities, and the number of hours per week in each position.
  • Education
    :
    Completion of four years post‑high‑school education in any field, obtained at an accredited business, secretarial, technical, junior college, college, or university. Transcripts must accompany the application.
  • Combination
    :
    An equivalent combination of post‑high‑school education and specialized experience that meets total qualification requirements. Documentation is required as with the education and experience sections above.

Physical Requirements:

The work is sedentary, requiring occasional movement to adjust equipment and carry light items.

Duties
  • Must reside within a commutable distance of the duty location; relocation not authorized.
  • This is a part‑time position: 16 hours per week, primarily in the AM shift.
  • Salary and benefits are prorated based on actual hours worked.
  • Provide routine information, receive and direct callers appropriately.
  • Offer general telephone and visitor referral services.
  • Operate the centralized attendant telephone system for incoming and outgoing calls.
  • Deliver customer service, including handling difficult calls requiring personal involvement.
  • Operate computerized telecommunication systems.
  • Maintain, list, and monitor computer‑generated telephone files.
  • Set up, operate, and monitor computer systems and peripheral equipment such as printers and alarms.
  • Respond promptly to programmed instructions, machine failures, or unscheduled halts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
