The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) protects the public and ensures that justice is done. The DOJ, Division of Management Services (DMS), provides operational support to the Department of Justice. The Division includes the Bureau of Budget and Finance (BBF), which prepares the agency's budget, performs accounting and fiscal control, and oversees Departmental facilities.

Position Summary

BBF is recruiting for an Accountant-Journey or Accountant-Senior position. This position is headquartered at the Risser Justice Center located at 17 West Main Street, Madison. Learn more about the area here:

Accountant-Journey: Under the general supervision of the department’s Financial Manager, this position is responsible for conducting financial activities and financial grants management within the Bureau of Budget and Finance, including preparing financial reports on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis, pre-auditing and approving grant payments, reconciliations, processing vendor payments and pre-auditing and approving travel expense reports and providing backup to other Accountants and Financial Specialists within the bureau.

Accountant-Senior: Under the general supervision of the Department’s Financial Manager, this position is responsible for independently providing a broad range of complex program and financial auditing, reviews, and accounting services to all the department’s operations.

This position provides complex analysis, development, and implementation of procedures to ensure the most efficient, effective and implementation of work plans and/or procedures. The individual in this role will interpret and analyze complex financial data; develop and maintain complicated automated financial systems; allocate revenues and expenses between appropriations and reconcile complex accounts. They will perform various reporting functions. This position is responsible for performing complex financial calculations;

performing accounting analysis; managing and maintaining DOJ financial data across two funds, multiple appropriation types and many appropriations and reconciling and analyzing our trial balance and clearing accounts.

This position will manage, coordinate and track DOJ’s capital assets and coordinate the annual physical inventory. They will preaudit and review Accounts Payable vouchers and this position reconciles and tracks many appropriations including both federal and state funding sources. Errors in this position could affect areas beyond the division level and could result in a loss of federal funding or a lapse of state funds.

Salary Information

The Accountant-Journey position is in pay schedule 07 and pay range 03. The starting base wage will be between $33.00/hour and $36.00/hour. The Accountant-Senior position is in pay schedule 07 and pay range 03. The starting base wage will be between $36.00/hour and $41.00/hour. The level and starting pay will be determined depending upon experience and qualifications.

Positions allocated to the Accountant classification series may be eligible for a base wage add-on of $1.00/hour upon obtaining a CPA license. Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan effective at the time of hire. A 12-month probationary period may be required.
