The Medical Assistant's primary tasks involve assisting the provider in preparing and executing patient exams and procedures, documenting and updating patient records in Practice Management (PM) and Electronic Health Records System (EHRS), collaborating with appropriate parties to implement the patient's treatment plan, and other clinical and administrative duties as needed.
Responsibilities- Assist the physician in evaluating and managing patients with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.
- Conduct initial patient assessments, including history-taking, functional testing, and documentation of findings.
- Provide patient education regarding injury prevention, rehabilitation, bracing, and return-to-activity protocols.
- Apply taping, bracing, and assistive devices as directed by the physician.
- Assist with in-office procedures such as joint injections, casting, splinting, and wound care.
- Demonstrate and instruct patients on prescribed rehabilitation exercises and home care plans.
- Document patient encounters accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
- Prepare electronic charts of upcoming new and established patients by entering all medical information relevant to the office visit, including patient history, symptoms, and complaints.
- Assist the Patient Care Representative in scheduling decisions.
- Coordinate imaging, referrals, and follow-up care as directed by the physician.
- Assist with pre-authorization and insurance documentation for procedures, bracing, and other treatments.
- Manage clinic workflow to ensure efficiency and timely patient care.
- Perform other duties that improve provider efficiency such as medication reconciliation, documenting procedures, and communication assistance.
- Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data.
- Maintain records with accurate spelling, correct grammar, and completeness before provider review.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures.
- Other administrative duties as needed.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, physical therapists, surgical offices, imaging centers, and other healthcare professionals.
- Stay up-to-date on best practices through continuing education.
- Assist the Clinic Lead in maintaining inventory of clinical supplies, braces, and durable medical equipment (DME).
- High school diploma
- At least 2 years of experience in an orthopedic setting.
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Familiarity with HIPAA regulations
- Ability to stand for extended periods during shifts
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Teams, etc.)
- Casting and Splinting Experience
- Medical Assistant Certification (CCMA) or equivalent
- Familiarity with medical billing, insurance, and authorizations
- Ortho Tech certification or other orthopedic experience a plus
